TomTom Mobile 5 GPS receiver package for Nokia 6620

Update: I just checked - TomTom uses TeleAtlas - a company that mostly specializes in European mapping... if I remember right, Navteq mostly does the big auto manufacturers built-in gps maps... at least, when I go to their web site they list them all...

Also, TeleAtlas lists Mapquest as one of their partners, so see if you can do a mapquest on your GF's house... if it shows up there, maybe you just need an updated map from TomTom?

Should work fine. I read you're supposed to leave the UK maps there because the UK Mobile 5 looks for them on startup.

Smart2Go should be released in October so we don't have to do so much fiddling w/ TomTom. Maybe we should just pester TomTom to release a US version? ;-)

What do the map files look like. I think I have some from an old version of Navigator 3. There is a really small .pna file with the name of the state and then 7 .dat files with it. poi, faces, cline, cnode, mapinfo, cname, and setup. Do you just drop all of these files into the root of the mmc card. Making the location of all these files E:\filehere.dat.

I don't know how useful this is going to be as there has been quite a bit of construction around here and these are pretty old map files.

the symbian version of TomTom mobile5 is not currently offered with USA and canada maps. that site is only for the pocketpc and palm version of Navigator5 which is totally different and wont work on the 6620.

my tomtom uk version works perfectly with the ppc canada maps, i never had to tweak anything, i just used my card reader to place the map into the root directory of my memory card and it loaded up perfectly, i will order my Globalsat BT-338 SiRF star III Bluetooth GPS Receiver next week hopefully i'll find a good one off ebay.....

you can use any map in the mobile version.
my friend has the ppc version of tomtom5 and extracted the FL map for me to try with mobile. works perfectly, but since i downloaded tomtom mobile 5 to test with the map i need to buy it now (need the gps module too)

The TomTom receiver works pretty good, but I am not able to do the 'leave it in the glovebox' trick that the gpspassion reviewer said he could do with the GlobalSat BT338 - I've just picked up a Holux GPSlim GR236 with a SS3 chipset, and I'll let you know how it goes...

Hopefully, I won't run into the baud issues I've read about with this unit... otherwise, the reviews say it's just as good as the GlobalSat, and I was able to pick it up for about 50$ less than what a GlobalSat is normally going for...

One other bonus of this item is the battery - there seems to be some controversy about if this unit can take the BL-5C battery and use the same chargers... if so, then that would be really cool - I'll try it out and see what happens...

I've been using the TomTom receiver for a couple of weeks. I usually keep it wedged between the sun visor and the ceiling. It takes longer to lock onto several sats this way, but it will grap 3 or 4 at enough signal to get a fix and it doesn't slide around the dash. The battery lasts me more than a week of commuting ~1 hour each day without recharging.
Once it has a lock on many sats (the Tomtom signal indicator shows 4 bars) it will hold it well through wooded areas and underpasses. It also does some inertial tracking when going through tunnels. This is my first GPS so I don't know if this a common feature or not.

Never had any problem with the TomTom application finding the GPS. The range is also very good. At least 30feet from the GPS to my phone (6620).

Not true! I'm using TomTom5 with a Holux GR-231 gps receiver.. works PERFECTLY! It pairs automatically on startup. I've been using it for the past month or so and have gone on a few hundred mile trips with California maps installed, it's pretty accurate. Voice prompts are nice

Great to hear! Can you post some details about your setup? (ie: phone, gps receiver, version of TomTom, what maps you are using, any particular configurations you had to do to get it to work?)

I'm struggling with having to buy the European version to TomTom Mobile 5, then buy another 125$ worth of maps just because they don't sell them here...

It really burns my butt, know what I mean?
