Tomboys in cartoons

I'd say so. She was captain of her neighborhood's baseball team. She competed in a local motocross (You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown). She was the quarterback of a football team (It's Your 1st Kiss, Charlie Brown). She hardly ever wore a dress or did anything girlie, and she wasn't above letting her fists do the talking when the situation arose. That spells 'tomboy' in my book.
 
I'm not quite sure if you're saying that tomboys can't be lesbians, but being a tomboy doesn't have anything to do with your sexual preference. The two labels aren't really related. This might be what you're saying if you're pointing out that Sailor Uranus fits the traditional female gender role in everything except sexual preference, though.

This is true. Haruka (Uranus) wears a suit with pants and cuts her hair short, causing a lot of people to actually mistake her for a man. Despite her sexual preferences, I'd say she clearly qualifies as a tomboy. Besides, Michiru (Neptune), who was Haruka's girlfriend, features lots of female traits, which should prove that both labels aren't necessarily related.
 
Except for her girly pink dress and hair bow, I think Helga from HA! is kind of a tomboy, since she likes rough sports and pro wrestling, and hates anything girly.
 
Sarah: she can basically beat up Eddy and Edd and can get really ticked off, she's a mix of brat and tomboy.
Mandy: She doesn't act like a typical girly girl, yet not into the whole emo thing, she also smacks Billy like Ren would to Stimpy.

Another one I thought of is Lola Bunny, she's adventurous and isn't scared of the bigger mutants in the film.
 
Lola Bunny a tomboy? Hardly. She dresses and acts like a stereotypical 'hot chick'.

Again, being brave and adventurous is NOT the mark of a tomboy. There are plenty of 'girly-girls' who love adventure and don't back down from a confrontation.
 
Riley Daring from The Replacements is a tomboy for sure. Although like someone else mentioned, she did go 'girly' for an episode.

Leela from Futurama is also a tomboy. Although she does beautify herself for special occasions, there is ample proof that she can out-fight both Fry and Bender and is often more aggresive and pro-active. I'd argue that her appearence (what with the boots and all) is what makes her a tomboy.
 
I think animation has forced most people to view any girl that's not a love interest of the main character and doesn't act in a dainty "I love pink things" manner as a tomboy. My own mother thinks Alicia Keys is a tomboy due to her lower octave sounding Brooklyn-ese voice, but she's one of the most feminine chicks in entertainment.
 
How is it a part of the series canon? I don't recall anyone saying she was a tomboy nor do I recall her even acting like a tomboy. I'm going by the definition of tomboy and from my own experiences with friends and classmates who were tomboys.



Last time I checked Riley hangs out with two female friends and is pretty much a goodie two-shoes.



I see a lot of that in this thread. People are basing it off of how brave the girl is or if she can fight and that's not right.
 
Eva from Total Drama Island would definite qualify... She's definied entirely by her love of bodybuilding and her temper. In fact, she verges on 'roid-case.
 
Well, for starters she wears male school uniform for Mugen Gakuen instead of the female one, and (I think) is the only member of the female cast of BSSM never seen in a dress or a skirt (while in civilian form, that is).

And then there's also the fact that Haruka is a racecar driver, and her dream is to become a professional racer. And keep in mind that Haruka appeared in the SM anime years before Danica Patrick came along.

I disagree. Pucca may be spunky, but she's no tomboy. Pucca doesn't act like a boy nor does she reject girly things. Again, just being determined and resourceful and having a temper alone are not signs of tomboyism. A lot us here seem to think that any girl who doesn't scream and run away at the 1st sign of conflict is a tomboy.
 
I was going to say something about the Pucca thing but it seems like whenever I say someone isn't a tomboy people seem to think it's just because I don't want them to be. I'm not saying I'm an expert but my sister was a tomboy, I had friends who were tomboys, I had classmates who were tomboys and I watched several TV shows that featured tomboys. I believe Ed Liu gave a pretty good example of what a tomboy is earlier in the thread but there's still confusion.
 
Well if you want the word "Tomboy" I think that in a lot of ways there are a few i can think of..

First off Gosalyn Mallard from Darkwing Duck, is definitely a tomboy.. Why? She likes Hockey, she defeinitely isn't into the "Girly clothes" and she can be tough as nails if she wants to be.. So yeah Gosalyn Mallard would be one.

Another is indeed Ashley Spinelli (From Recess) Let's just face it, the jacket, the army boots, that tude of hers, well she's wanting to be a boy but she's a girl with a boy breaking out..

Buttercup of the PPG (and the PPGZ) both are definitely tomboys espeically the PPGZ version. I mean take a look at what Buttercup wears in PPGZ and it literally screams male..

Lor from the Weekenders? Yep she's a tomboy from the word go..and for good reason.. sports inclined, and having an attitude that is more male in nature than say Tish.. She's definitely tomboy with good reason..

Toph from Avatar? Absolutely Tomboy.. that Rough and tough attitude starts when we first meet her and even though she is indeed blind she has no real reason to like wearing kimonos and dresses.. He attitude speaks it...

Also here's a few others some folks haven't mentioned..

Zatanna from G.I. Joe. Between her brother Zartan and the Dredlokks, Zartana's look exude Tomboy. I think you only see her once in a dress (but that's a disguise really) In G.I. Joe the Movie. other than that, and maybe one other time in the entire G.I. Joe series she passes herself off as not a tomboy type.. but still the boots, the ripped jeans.. Tomboy in nature..

And what about Kim Possible? Granted Kim's dressed up a few times in Season 4 to go out on dates with Ron, but let's look here.. Mission clothes that are more along the lines of male clothing? And an attitude to match? I would say Kim closely fits the bill with a few exceptional episodes. (Emotion sickness Comes to mind..)

and what about Gwen Tennison from Ben 10 (not Alien Force but the Original). Take a look at what Gwen's sporting.. Shorts, a Cat T-shirt and an attitude that is more male than female, and if she can give Ben a noogie then you know that she's definitely a Tomboy when she's 10, but at 15? She's mellowed and become more feminine...

Pucca? Definitely when you get her looking that way is indeed a tomboy.. within reason. But to be really a tomboy you have to sport the look, and there are a few episodes where she isn't sporting masculine clothing.

So here are some examples.. Tomboys are usually tough, can take care of themselves and usually can be feminine but usually aren't.. I mean if you can imagine Kim Possible working on a car, does that make her a tomboy? Kim I feel could go either way, but that tougher than nails exterior hides some femininity behind her.

Eliza Maza? Hmmm that's debatable on a lot of levels.
