Tomboys in cartoons

with the thread about popular/rich girls. Maybe it's time for a thread about the tomboys. Which characters might fit in this category? Here the ones then I know

-Maurecia, Jenny (Wayside)
-Alex (Totally Spies)

EDIT: The reasons why I think they might be a tomboy, in the case of Maurecia and Jenny. They do lots of activities (like doing some various stunts with roller skates and bikes) who are the domains of boys. As for Alex, she's seems to go more further in sports then Clover and Sam.

Here the Wikipedia entry about Tomboy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomboy

Not only do I think we need to slow down a little with these list threads (we have at least ten on the first page alone) but you didn't even list any reasons why you chose these two characters. Read the list thread rules and edit this post before a mod locks it.

Please explain your choices; anybody can just rattle of a list of names. We're getting glutted with too many list threads as it is.

That said, I have to question some of these choices. Spinelli is a tomboy to be sure, and Buttercup, yeah, in that she's the toughest PPG, likes to fight and has an aversion to all things sweet, tame and gentle, but how are Mandy and Sarah tomboys? Mandy, based on what I've seen, is just an ill-tempered sourpuss and maybe a tad emo, but I'd hardly classify her as a tomboy. And Sarah is mainly extremely obnoxious (basically a monstrous take on the bratty little sister cliche) but she plays with dolls, likes to play tea parties, princesses and dress-up and hangs out with Jimmy, easily the biggest sissy on the planet. Those qualities do not a tomboy make.

i dont see it, she seems just as "girly girly" as the other two, just slightly more impulsive and athletic, which does not equal Tomboy.

anyway

Toph from Avatar the last airbender is a tomboy, shes dirty (dirtier than me even), exremely impulsive, violent prone and confrontational in a guyish sort of way, she also likes rolling around in dirt, and burps freely (probably farts freely too), she is tomboy. I know little boys who act just like her.

Terk from The Legend of Tarzan is a tomboy. I mean, just look at her. She's rough and tough. The first time I saw Terk, I thought she was a boy. She sure acts like it.

Please explain how Alex is a tomboy, not only because it's the rule in list threads but I've never known her to be a tomboy.

Mandy is not a tomboy and she's not emo. Mandy is pure evil and lots of episodes focus on that fact. Sara may beat up on the Eds and on other occasions she's beat up other characters but she's not a tomboy. Sara is like a sweet innocent little girl and she only shows her teeth and nails when someone bothers her or Jimmy.

Cowboy Bebop's Faye Valentine--she may look female, but she's tough as nails, and uses her kick bvtt fightercraft and is crafty with money and the like.

It's Summer time. No new Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, American Dad or South Park. Really, when these shows aren't on what else is there to discuss? It happens every Summer.

There seems to be some confusion over what a tomboy is.

A tomboy is a girl who rejects traditional feminine clothing and gender roles in favor of the boyish equivalents. Characters like Faye Valentine or Mandy are girls/women who can stand up with the boys as an equal and not a subordinate. Faye may adopt many masculine traits or behaviors, but she most definitely does NOT dress like a man and will happily use her gender to get what she wants. A tomboy tends to reject that kind of behavior out of hand.

Spinelli on Recess is a perfect example of a tomboy, as is Toph on Avatar. However, even though she can play with (and beat) the boys at their own game, Princess Azula of Avatar is not a tomboy.

All that being said, I can't really think of any other cool animated tomboys myself at the moment :o.

Sailor Jupiter (Sailor Moon)-I mean she's pretty tough, before she found out she was a Sailor Senshi she had like a dozen fights in her previous school. Even though she does have a girly side to her but she really does act like a tomboy especially since her civilian clothes are mostly not-femimine.

Sailor Uranus (Sailor Moon)-Now she is the perfect example of a tomboy. She dresses like a guy, likes two of the things males usually prefer: Cars and Girls.

Sailor Uranus is no mere tomboy; she's a full-blown lesbian. There's a difference.

It's a thin line, sure, but said line is crossed when the subject rejects relationships with males in favor of her fellow females.

Uh-uh. Faye Valentine is no tomboy. Using one's femininity (pretty face, sexy body) to persuade, con or influence men is not the act of tomboyism. Being crafty with money is also not a trait attributed to tomboys.

Just to be clear, like Ed already said: a tomboy is a girl or woman who acts rough, loud, especially aggressive, or whose behavior, dress and mannerisms are more man-like than lady-like.

That said, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Peppermint Patty from Peanuts yet. Patty even has a best friend who always calls her "Sir".

Given that Goz was tougher on Tank Muddlefoot than his own brother, and that Drake had to practically hog-tie her just to get her in a dress, I'd say so.

Thanks for setting them straight Ed. I think maybe a few of the members here are a bit young and weren't around when that phrase was popular.

I don't know. Patty never liked being called Sir and did she ever seem tomboyish?
