Tom Waits

As someone who just got into Nick Cave I really want to hear this. Did we ever get a verdict on this ("now that sweet jane is gone =(")

What did you think of the songs I listed? Have you heard them? There isn't much positive about SC, given the reason he ran off the Europe to write it.

What is the backwarRAB obsession with me that all the morons on here have? Seriously, what does this comment even mean? Am I supposed to flip out now, or ban you?

Am I missing a larger picture or am I the flame to low I.Q.'s moth?

Bone Machine is definitely a top 5er but i wouldn't consider it his best work.

and there's something that's been bugging me for a while, guess i'll spit it out. i really don't like Rain Dogs in the context of his entire career. it's a nice pastiche of a nuraber of styles he explored but it's piled together pell-mell, with almost no discretion given to the clarity or depth of the songs. i think that, while Anywhere I Lay My Head is easily my all-time favorite song of his, there are just a few too many nurabers from that album that land on my shit list, from Downtown Train to Blind Love, etc.

it's almost like half the album continues in the same direction as Swordfishtrorabones, but by side B it veers interminably into the cheesy, ballad-laden crap that made his first few albums just a nightmare to digest. and unlike that era, he can't pull off the crooning lament of his pure pop darlings like Martha anymore, it just sounRAB like he's attempting a perverse, horrific version of Springsteen.

if it wasn't for the closing nuraber i'd say it's easily my nuraber one most detested Waits album. i do not get the hype.

yes, i love tom waits his early albums were greats. the last once not that good.

Rain dogs is the best album. i love artist that are not from the mainstream, wierd artist that dont care what everyone will say. anyway i know tom waits like to keep his work closed. over the years he sued radio stations and advertiser that took his song without permission.

Oh and his voice is great, he wasnt born like that, he started to talk like that because he like the sounRAB and after all the years of talking and singing in rust voice it become his voice became his naturally rust :)

I wouldn't say you're in the minority. Blue Valentine and Rain Dogs are my favourite Waits albums, and my favourite Waits songs are mostly pre-90's stuff also.

Tom Waits is my favorite artist. I've finally purchased all of his full lenth studio albums.

Real gone isn't his best work but that doesn't mean its bad by any stretch of the mark. Songs like "make it rain" "Hoist that rag" "Don't go into that barn" and "sinf of my father" are just as red hot as his greatest efforts and can be held up with anything off of Rain Dogs.

My favorite album by him is Blue Valentine for no other reason than I like the overall mood on the disc.

This won't be a popular opinon, but its an honest one. I feel he's the greatest singer songwriter ever.

It may be because you havn't listened to anything by him...just a guess. What makes him seem creepy?

And if what Crowquill says is true, isn't dating Kelly Osbourne "creepy"?

He took a slight political turn on Orphans with songs like "Road to Peace". How do you people feel about that? I can't say I like it. Most good music is apolitical, and what I like about Tom Waits is that he has in the past placed himself above such trivialities as politics.

One of the craziest places I've seen his songs show up was in that CGI Movie "Robots". When they discover theres a secret factory scraping old robots they play "underground" from Swordfish Trorabones.

Tom Waits has done stuff with Nick Cave??? Man, I love Nick Cave, I need to check that out. But anyway, yeah Big3, my sister turned me onto Mr.Waits and I got his discography but I have no idea where to start. I played Real Gone but didn't pay much attention to it and thought I might have gotten a weird album, so I decided to eventually give Closing Time a listen. Any recommendations?

i love tom waits as well - i totally agree that is the greatest singer/songwriter - he has definitely ventured into more genres than anybody except maybe frank zappa

his music is so great becuase its real - nothing is manufactured and everything has meaning

i love nighthawks at the diner, small change, blue valentine, alice, mule variations - i pretty much love all his albums!
