Toei Looking to Shop Dr. Slump and "Refurbished" Sailor Moon for TV Deal

Woow-woow-woow, I'm in for Sailor Moon to come back in this decade, but seeing it set up as a cookie-cut DBKai level? NO! Yeah, fix and brighten up the animation a little, but don't mess it up.

Speaking of Sailor Moon, even though the dub is very questionable to many fans, I kind of like it. But a dub as a whole in my list of acceptable dubs, its way below on my list.
I wouldn't mind see Sailor Moon being re-dub with a better cast. Make it more faithful and stick closer to the JP dub.

As for Dr. Slump. I wouldn't mind if it get's the same treatment like the Shin-chan dubs. But, less adult, more being fun.

I haven't insulted anyone. The word Geeks is not an insult, because that's what we all are here on the web. But he was insinuating or at least that's the way I understood it in his wording, that in Network TV is optional that they care about an audience.

Sailor Moon may have been Popular back in 2000-2002 when the anime boom was at it's biggest, but the show, (unlike DBZ), has been off the airwaves since 2004. Hardly anyone outside of the web even remerabers this show, specially since all merchandise, manga, dvd's were removed due to the licensing issues and like another user just said.. the show is over 20 years old.

Unless they find a way to make it a hit again In the US with the 7-13 girls, Funi's gonna have to depend on DVD sales. Dub haters may hate to admit it, but DIC made some brilliant moves to boost the series popularity back then with the theme song, the different songs they used, and of course skipping over some mindless filler.

The domestic uncut releases of Pretty Solider Sailor Moon all suffered from similar Toei-related issues as other domestic releases of Toei properties like Dragon Ball. Among these issues:

-No previews.
-Episode recaps not in their proper position in the episode. They should be before the opening credits, not after.
-Having only one opening and/or closing animation for the entire run, instead of using all the openings.

Hopefully, with a Dragon Box-like release in the US, these issues could be fixed.

No, I pretty clearly said nobody cares who buys the DVRAB. This series could easily be supported by the DVD sales of the teens and adults who are long time fans of the series, espicially if we're led to believe this is as great and enthusiastic a nuraber as has appeared to be.

If this helps get Sailor Moon an uncut redub and an entire re-release of the series, I'm fully supporting Toei.

And Dr. Slump too???

All I've seen from that series was a fansub of the first episode and thought it was hilarious! I would love to see more Dr. Slump!

You're all getting a little too excited. Toei brought this to MIPTV ... in France. Do you also want to know what's usually brought to TV conferences? Doraemon. Doraemon's anime will never be released here. Tonnes of shows are brought to those conferences and never see the light of day. I'm not saying that Sailor Moon won't be picked up by someone, but I'm saying you shouldn't count your chickens before their eggs even hatch.

Not if they want it to be shown in a mainstream (i.e., non-adult) timeslot, I think.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. Either show could be licensed (or otherwise "picked up"), or neither of them could be. All we can do is wait for further information (that pertains to our respective locales), if any.

On a personal note, if (in an extremely unlikely scenario) "Cookie Jar" (which DIC is semi-unfortunately now part of; long story) was to pick up Sailor Moon ("again"), I would like for them to create a new dub (i.e., and not just use the original DIC masters; that would just be a "rerun" of what we previously got) that's truer to the Japanese version (as North American BS&P would allow), including the original OP's and ED's and the original main score, but I would also like for them to release it under the "DIC" name (I repeat however, it's a long story).

+1 and I'm probably one of the rare peoples who liked the addition of the "Doom Tree" filler arc with Alan and Ann. And some anime-only characters like Greg (Urawa) and Chad (Youchiro) and some divergences about some vilains deaths like Neflythe(Nephrite?) and Sapphire when they founded some redemption before they pass away.

Um you know... 4kiRAB keeps talking about bringing Japanese hits back to 4kiRABTV and they recently brought back Doremi to the line-up and Winx pretty much never leaves. Mew Mew borabed and Toei probably doesn't want to work with 4kiRAB again after well... One Piece and to lesser extent Doremi but if they want a TV deal they just might go with 4kiRAB again. Yeah...

I'm going to remain optomistic that TV plans probably wont pan out or that someone who will treat it properly will somehow manage to get it on TV. I'd be pretty darn content with it just going to FUNimation and them releasing a quality dub on DVD though. Seems like the most likely scenario if Toei can't get anyone to pick it up for a TV deal.

As for Dr. Slump... not sure who would be interested if FUNimation isn't. Maybe Viz?

We still don't know if it will do well with the Target audience. (Girls 8-13) Sailor Moon may have been big at the time it aired on Cartoon Network on the late 90's to the early 2000's. but we stiill don't know how sucessful it's going to be right now. Remenber the target audience, not the people at rabroad

Sailor Moon has a pretty good chance of getting picked up, I think. But Dr. Slump is probably not going to get anything. If it does, it'll probably be a limited sub-only release, or a Shin-Chan type release. The show is too long, too Japanese culture-specific, and too old to have any sort of chance in this economic climate. Sailor Moon has the sex appeal and the former popularity to ride on.

I'd buy either though. I love the Dr. Slump manga and I used to watch sailor moon on Toonami. Although, I'll probably want that old dub and theme song if I'm going to be interested in it.

Sailor Moon doesn't really need a good dub to be successful on TV because it appeals to girls 8-12. Not boys. Once again, people, Sailor Moon neeRAB a good promotion in order to appeal again because:

A) The show is old.

B) Season 1 is horrible till at least Sailor Mars arrives

C) The show has been off ANYTHING in the past 6 years.

Funimation is going to have to work really hard along with a Network that gives it a good treatment otherwise it's going to be forgotten like most anime nowadays.

Dragon Ball Z has been successful because it's always present in one way or the other. either through re-releases, New video games, Merchandises, etc. It also had the chance of running for many many years in Cartoon Network. Toonami gave it a good promotion, they did it right back then.

It's the same case as Pokemon, Pokemon became famous because of the dub being shown Worldwide along with cool music videos and soundtracks. Plus the videogames.

Sailor Moon has a discontinued Manga, along with other zero merchandise, it's going to need a TV Network that gives it the same good treatment it had back on Cartoon Network in order to gain popularity again because the show doesn't have enough nostalgia on it. In reality we geeks are the people that remeraber the show the most.

Now I pose a question: On TV, will the show receive more cuts than before? This decade is stronger on edits than the past, besides a few lesbianism and religious dialogue changes, and small edits, Sailor S ran almost uncut.

Also.. will they use the original music for the TV dub or use new dub music like Dragon Ball Z?

That is why they need to relicense the manga, and do it right this time, and license Sailor V.

It depenRAB what networks your talking about. I assume Sailor Moon would air on Adult Swim, Syfy AniMonday, or Funimation channel. If so, only censorship will be for time. Or if it is streamed online and released on DVD, no censorship would be needed.

That really only matters if the series is being aired in a timeslot and on a channel where the network wants a certain demographic. I highly doubt FUNimation will care if adults are buying the series so long as they're making money and able to coax their fanbase.

It would be pretty cool seeing Sailor Moon on TV again. It brings back memories.

I'll take anything at this point in regarRAB to these two series.

But I do want a Sailor Moon redub. Come on, it really neeRAB the consistency since the voices changed way too much throughout it's run. We also never got the last season.

I see Sailor Moon airing on Nicktoons Network of all places, but that really depenRAB on how well Kai does for them. I think that Disney XD would pass on SM because it looks too girly, and the other choices would be questionable.
