Toei Looking to Shop Dr. Slump and "Refurbished" Sailor Moon for TV Deal

I was thinking they would digitally draw over the footage, ala Kai...but then again...that'd be a lot for two hundred episodes, so I think it's just a Dragon Box-esque remastering from the original 16mm reels, which I am sure will look gorgeous, if Dragon Ball's Dragon Boxes are any indication.
 
The show would be a lot more adaptable to Western tastes than Shin-chan was, if done right.
The series was shown in several countries in continental Europe back in the day and was a hit over there.

I think the only thing working against it would be its age. It's nearly 30 years old(!). The animation looks about as dated as the first episodes of Dragon Ball (1986).
 
I really don't get why ppl are saying Sailor Moon might come back on T.V. I mean, look how they are dress.



I mean, in the past it was ok. Many ppl see it as being little innocent. Though, some ppl did have some problems with it.
But now since censorship is pretty tight now in days, will this pass? Even with edits?
 
A new release of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon with a new dub would be awesome. The ADV uncut release of the first two series was plagued with errors and was sub-only.
 
Sailor Moon is the girl's equivalent to DBZ. Chances are any woman who watches anime saw at least some of SM.

Besides, you look at Sailor Moon and pick at how they dress?
 
I think Sailor Moon is more likely to just be remastered. A show from a bit later in the 90s, Cardcaptor Sakura, is getting a Blu-Ray release in Japan that is gloriously pristine. Redrawing it a la Kai has to be more work and that just isn't worth it unless it might actually come back to Japanese television.
 
I seriously doubt "Dr. Slump" will get an American release. I remeraber watching a fansub panel online someone recorded at a convention and Adam Sheehan said it wouldn't sell well, and he's probably right I hate to say.
 
Popularity is not Sailor Moon's problem. Trust me, it is a VERY popular show and would sell fairly well for whoever gets it. The problem comes from the price they would have to pay for it and the restrictions that come with taking on one of Toei's signature shows. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out, but we're not likely to know all the details since these contracts are never public.
 
I agree. Although I've been a fan of the SM dub and the voices, the show really neeRAB to the treatment it deserves. Being the sacrificial larab that hooked alot of anime fans today, it would be nice to see the show in its glory, without all the bugs.
 
A "Dragon Ball Kai" style treatment of Sailor Moon would absolutely not work. The anime differs drastically from the original manga in many places (e.g., some characters' personalities were either altered or exaggerated, but most notably, a lot of filler elements were added to it, to the point where the flow of the story had to be altered). I understand that it even overtook the manga at one point (but I could be wrong, so don't quote me). Part of this has to do with the fact that Sailor Moon was a monthly manga (unlike Dragon Ball which was weekly). They were able to do Dragon Ball Kai because the existing material (i.e., the original 1989 "Dragon Ball Z" footage) was much more faithful to the manga. All they had to do was take out the filler and "stalling" to make it truer to the pacing of the manga. This wouldn't be possible with Sailor Moon.

The only way it would work is if Toei created brand new footage and dialogue that would reflect what actually happened in the manga. Even if they were to corabine it with existing footage, it still practically be a "remake" rather than a "remastering". Really, the anime is that different from the manga.

Also, if it says "200" episodes. I'm guessing Toei is now allowing licensors to broadcast (or otherwise release) the "dinosaur island" episode I've heard so much about?
 
Uhh.. if it were aired on most networks today (like Nicktoons or Disney XD), I doubt miniskirts would be a concern.
However, the body outlines shown during their transformations may still run into BS&P problems.

I think the only obstacle the show could have airing on TV would be whether the networks would bite at an action show targeted towarRAB girls, which is the age-old problem that always plagued magical girl shows on US TV.
 
Well, the body lines might be censored cause when Digimon Data Squad aired Rosemon's body lines were censored you woule think with stuff like Hannah Montana, iCarly, and WizarRAB of Waverly Place on tv body lines would'nt be a concern I mean Carly and her frienRAB wear talk bras and are even shown naked with towels around them. The problem with Magical Girl Anime in the US is people don't wanna give it a chance.
 
I only used the Kai term because the wording 'refurbished' is similar to the Kai claims of it being 'refreshed' or 'renewed'. By all accounts it looks to just be a mastering, hopefully in the vein of the Dragon Box that Toei and Pony Canyon worked on.
 
This is a dream come true....... How I've longed for the return of the series that first got me into anime in the first place. Getting Dr. Slump too, is nice bonus.
 
This is not a popular show even in the conventional sense. The most people know about it is that it's the butt of jokes about hentai and crazy Japanese people. Not to mention, it is over 20 years old at this point. It's poorly animated, and hardly the type of show to dedicate a block to. So why are we even having a discussion about it airing on TV?
 
If a new dub was to be attempted, it should be a completely fresh take on the show without regarRAB to the DiC dub. Usagi would be called Usagi and not Serena, attack names would be accurate and consistant, Zoicite would be male, etc.
Similar to how ADV did their dub of original Macross as if Robotech never existed.

And if it was to be dubbed by Funimation, they could keep that Shin-chan reference in SMS.
 
Personally, I don't see why body outlines would be considered a big deal. They're no different than, say, wearing a swimsuit, except for the fact that you can't even SEE skin.
 
Agreed, just ignored the previous dub and its changes. That is what the manga did not do, they tried to play to both audiances. They used the dub names for characters that were introduced in season 1 and 2, but keep the Japanese names for the charcters introduced in later season, they made Usagi real name Serena but only stated in chapter 1, giving her the nickname Bunny.

Comparing the two dubs, each its flaws. DIC was heavily edited, but with the background and music changes, the voices flowed with it, the Cloverway dud didn't edit on screen or in the background, but the voices don't flow with the original music and background noice, it sounRAB like a fan dub.

If they could somehow dub it with nothing edited, and have the voices flow perfectly with everything. Hopefully they could do that.

One last note on Shin Chan, hopefully they could get Laura Bailey to voice that kid in SMS. And maybe even the actress who voiced Shin's mom to voice the mother of the kid.
