To what extent is drawing from a photo copyright infringement?

Lately, during freetime in my classes, I have started sketching from photos of animals in my textbooks. Later, I use these sketches to create refined artworks. I combine them with other sketches and whatever and do random stuff.

But, I know a lot of things like say.. an AP Art portfolio technically isn't supposed to include artwork copied from other people's photos, but I wondered like... is it considered copyright infringement to have an animal drawn in the same pose as an animal in someone else's photo? Or with the same/similar lighting?

Yes its copyright infringement but I think you know that. You can call the owner of the copyright and ask them if you can use the photo. I have done this and have yet to be told no. I think they are usually surprised to be asked. They are never surprised by having their work stolen. But they do sue those people that do.
