to what extent does the sumpreme court balance individual rights w/ the common good...

...of society? i mean to me,
The U.S gives us so many individual rights and we claim to have so many
but when it comes to supreme court cases alot of individual lose that right because
of the "common good of sociey"
do you think this is true? and to what extent?
