To people who have Blu-Ray

Yes, the seamless branching of blu-ray is one of its great, unnoticed, advantages. Sure, DVD has this capability, too - but I'v never seen it accomplished as seamlessly as it is on Blu-Ray. The pop-up menu system is also quite useful, as opposed to having to exit the film if you want the menu in DVD.

But I do have to admit that Blu-Ray only comes into its own if you have the extra equipment to take advantage of it. A DVD would be an improvement over VHS on a traditional CRT TV. But plug a Blu-Ray player into your old SDTV and be prepared to be totally underwhelmed.

Personally, I have a 50" HDTV (an old one, though, which can only do 720P and 1080i) and a Denon amp (capable of HD audio, such as DolbyHD, DTS-HDMA and uncompressed PCM Hd audio) and a

If you have a decent setup the difference is easy to see.

Anyone who has a clue can pick up New Release Blurays cheaper than most people pay for dvd's.

While we don't have the prices as low as

Thats what people said about buying dvd's of films they had on vhs.
While I will always buy new releases on Blu if there is one , I spend most of my time buying Blurays of my favourites that I have on dvd.
I'm not intending to buy my entire collection again as I have several thousand dvd's but my fave films and tv shows are a no brainer.

Just picked up the Star Trek TOS season 3 release from the US and incredibly Paramount have packed all 6 discs into a case the size of a standard single regular disc.

I thought I had the wrong thing to start with.

But if you like a tv show or movie the crystal clarityof Bluray is irresistible but I do have lots of dvd's where I'm not really bothered about seeing them clearer .

DVD's are already worth next to nothing as seen by the sale prices and anything that comes out on Blu will immediately make the dvd an obsolete worthless object .

He said the difference in picture quality/flexibility was huge between VHS and DVD and not so huge between DVD/Blu-Ray. I cannot figure out what point he was trying to make. He was trying to justify that a pixel ratio of 2:1 is better than a pixel ratio of 6:1.
I say the VHS/DVD picture quality was only doubled and visually it was barely noticable on certain DVRAB at the time. Especially when the digital artefacts are taken into consideration.
For example I bought Die Hard (Pan and Scan) on VHS in 1996 and then in 2001 I got the DVD (Pan and Scan) version. The VHS version was actually of better definition when compared frame by frame.

Undoubtedly although I guess they will be separate releases as a boxset would need to include the unobtainable TMP

Glasses are needed so its just another gimmick that will die out pretty quickly.

We've had 3D systems several times over the years and none have ever been more than a gimmick and this will be no different .

3D will be PalPlus all over again.
Lots of noise from retailers and little interest from those expected to shell out for new tv's and new players all over again just for a gimmick.

It will fail

I see what you're saying, but there's a marked difference between then, and now. 3D of old was never talked about on the scale it is now. It was discussed by tech-heaRAB (the same people who owned laserdisk, Phillips CD-I and Amiga CD32) (:oon all counts, ahem) but now there's a massive buzz about it. Probably off the back of Avatar, but so be it. Avatar moved the goalposts, and I think people are ready to wear some stupid glasses in the name of entertainment.

I know that CES isn't a crystal ball, but it does show (along with a Youtube full of people's visit videos) that people are ready for 3D (IMO natch)
Still failng to see how that makes me seem 'silly'

I had LD too - it was great even though I knew it was never going to take over from VHS but I got so sick of VHS that I was willing to buy into a failing format , although most discs of note were NTSC.

The only thing I thought was silly was that you appeared to be claiming that an appearance at CES was a guarantee of success.

Sorry if I misunderstood

Well thats a shame would love too see the battle scenes on a great transfer - When I bought Robocop on Criterion many moons ago on dvd that was Region 0 - I thought they might do the same on Blueray.

I haven't read through the entire thread so I don't know if this has been said or not, but I've noticed that some films (The Hangover, Terminator Salvation) get extended releases only on Blu-Ray.

No bother, and we can agree to disagree on 3D, but just so you know, when I'm right, I'll be digging this thread up to rub in your face;)
