To Internet or Not To Internet (???)

Hello All! In the past 2 days, I have been speaking to Cingular and T-Mobile technical support. And I am very confused. I will ask you, hopes that you can help. Can I use a smartphone/PDA (ie t-mobile dash, SE p990i, SE w810i) as an Internet connection for my laptop AND get that Internet at broadband speed? I am a college student and my current workplace requires me to travel. I need to connect to the Internet wirelessly, sometimes download/upload large files. I would prefer to go with tmobile simply because they are cheaper. i am a student on a budget, your suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!!

I don't think it is possible to get broadband speed when tethering. I have a Verizon EV-DO aircard that is pretty fast in areas where EV-DO is available. Cingular is advertising their new network as broadband speed, but it isn't as built out as Verizon's.

OK, to further the confusion, the TMobile CSR said I can purchase the TMobile DASH, add the total internet ($29.99) purchase the Sony Ericsson wireless card (SE GC89) use the phone for phone calls but remove the SIMcard, place it in the WireLess card and use it on my laptop for fast Internet........ have any of you tried this?
