Yeah, the purple-haired woman showed up briefly as one of the other teachers at Tohma's school, but I don't recall much more than that. It wasn't a very large role.
The nervous girl reminded me of the character the last arc was based around,
the one who wasn't really human,
but I don't think it was the same person (haven't actually checked).

Yeah she reminded me of girl in the last arc aswell, but that couldnt be the case, right?

Like if you watched Umineko without watching Higurashi first

I disagree there. I'm enjoying Umineko just as much as anyone who's seen Higurashi, if not more.

Unless I'm forgetting something from the original series, the SWAT members are new characters.

If I remember correctly we get so see the SWAT members during Sherry Cromwell's appearance (the golem user aka Ellis).

The first episode was good. But let me guess, we won't get to see Touma or Index?
I thought it was gonna be a follow up, but it seems like it was a side story after all.

Well, I mean that you'll miss out on things that those who have seen the other show will recognize instantly. Like how
Bernkastel and Lambadelta's characters are based on/are characters from Higurashi.

It's not that you won't enjoy the show, but you'll miss out on the subtle nods that the show makes to the previous season. For example: I have no idea who Touma is. Now if he shows up in the background, or is doing some psychic stuff, but never gets named, i kinda lose some of the wow factor.

Anime's purposes are to entertain the audience, completely understanding it doesn't exactly mean a better experience while watching. Besides, what's there to explain about witches. And I've had enough of Higurashi talk anyway, I'm changing my mind about watching it.
Plus there was no need to reply to my quote, that was just my opinion, clearly. It's not like I was saying everyone is the same.
So let's keep it within the topic's title and not start talking about Higurashi even here.
