Tmobile sidekick xl???

So i just got the sidekick xl for tmobile but I have AT&T. It works fine for texting an calling but it said I needed a data plan. So I ordered a data plan (the basic 15 dollar one) but I just read somewhere that it's pointless because since I have AT&T the Internet/pic messaging won't work. Is this true? If so how can I fix it? I'm confused.
