just a warning to everyone:

the lcal t-mobile store is telling everyone that the data plan is required now. this is true. but he is saying that if you dont have the data plan, when you turn off the phone, the phone will delete all your contacts. this is totaly out there. just plain wrong and i got into an arguement with him about it. i have a curve, and have had it for 2 years. ive turned it off so many time and my contacts are still there.

be on the lookout for this crap.

if you dont want the data plan, buy an unlocked phone, and use it with your old contract. this will work fine and you wont have to pay the extra 25 a month. if you think about it, buying a full price phone will pay for itself in 8 months depending on where you get it without the data plan.

tmobile really disappointed me on this one.
 
Tmobile isn't just one rep, I have had great succes with them. Sounds like you found a keep there lol. Go to a different store and talk to somebody who knows something
 
I would say your experience is not a Tmobile philosophy, but rather a poor sales rep who lacks knowledge and ability to do it the right way.

I agree, Some reps out there really dont know what in the world they are taking about. I have to call around to just get someone who know whats going on when it comes to BBs. However, I have good CS when i get someone who know what there doing.
 
A little inside info for folks out there. The data plans are going to be required for all contract customers when activating/renewing using a PDA device/Smartphone purchased with a discount. The data plan is NOT removable (according to the release we were given) unless one of three things happen:

1. The contract term is met.
2. Customer upgrades into a new device with a new contract that is not a PDA Device/Smartphone/All In One.
3. Customer purchases a new device at full retail price.

Not sure how moving to an unlocked unit will affect this but as we read it (haven't had it explained yet) you will not be able to remove the data plan easily. I do believe this will help cut out churn but it definitely is going to make some people extremely mad if they aren't explained those finer points when they buy a new unit somewhere.

There is a easy way around it all you have to do is buy a TMO prepay phone and say that you lost your smartphone give them the imei of the prepay that you can get at walmart for 20 bucks and then they will take it off. After that put your sim back into the smartphone. Another way is in my.t-mobile.com it will allow you to take it off unless they have fixed that glitch but as far as I know they havent
 
They are supposed to have the "glitches" fixed on the 13th of this month. We recieved notification that the system will from now on automatically add the data plan to the account when we do an activation or renewal and the IMEI pulls up a smartphone. We will see what actually happens after that date.

i talked to phone support last night, and they told me that they are going to give people a choice. either they get the data plan, or they get the unlimited texting plan. either way it is required to have either or for 2 years. i have herd this from 2 different sources now. the stores didnt know what i was talking about though. both the phone support and the stores again told me that you would lose contacts if the phone turned off without the data plan. i could see this for the g1, but not a blackberry. i install the BES servers and deal with the phones daily for my job.

funny thing is, the website doesnt have any clue about this. so its like they are trying to keep it a secret. if this is the case, id be fine. i already have the unlimited texting and unlimited calling with my loyalty plan. no more money a month for me.

ill keep calling CS to see if they tell me the same thing over and over again. others feel free to call and let me know what you get for an answer. this is for the 8900 btw.
 
That is true Ju1c3 you can get the unlimited texting plan instead of the data package you would probably have to order the phone from customer care because most stores jumped on this and will only sell you the phone with the data package.
 
Well there are a couple different reasons. The higher commission is one but I live in St. Louis and here there are no corp. stores they are all run by a dealer and when you are a dealer you pay alot of money for the phones almost retail price and when you are selling it at a discount you have to make back your money plus extra in order for your business to survive. I work for a dealer and it has always been our policy that if someone bought a smartphone they had to get the data package or pay more for the phone. Really not to much has changed with them forcing the data package because before that if you didnt get the data you wouldnt get your mail in rebate. I dont agree with the mandatory for the contract but I do understand it from a company point of view due to the revenue factor. But I have always have had the data plans for my phone so it doesnt really make a difference to me
 
wouldn't it be smarter for customers to just pay $5 more and get an iphone with att????????? just thinking outside the tmo box which is starting to cramp my bank account. if im that close to att pricing why not go with the better carrier?
 
its official, you can use the unlimited texting plan(14.99) instead of the data plan(24.99) and get the phone discount. i called customer care again, and they actually took the documentation they have and attached it to my account so when i go into the store, they have the info already and i dont have to argue with the idiots. enjoy saving money and not needing the data plan.

why not get an iphone? because i have unlimited texting and talk for $70 a month. plus i am always in range of wifi. no need for data plan. and i love the UMA becuase i live in the boonies, and AT&T get crap for reception out there just like t-mobile.
 
I know this plan wasn't available in September but now they are offering an everything unlimited plan for 80 bucks a month including the data package. I'm on a flex plan because I didn't want to get stuck in a contract and have just moved into this rate and to me its more than justifiable for the cost. I don't think ten bucks more a month would hurt you would it?
