Deutsche Telekom May Look at Sprint, Merrill Says (Update1)

By Philipp Grontzki
March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Telekom AG, Europe's largest phone company, may consider a takeover of Sprint Nextel Corp. of the U.S. as a price war would put pressure on the German company to act, Merrill Lynch said.
Currency and share price movements over the last six months have increased the chances of further major consolidation in the U.S. wireless market, Merrill analysts including Graham Ruck said in a report today. Sprint's operational problems could prompt it to become more aggressive on price, the analysts said.
Sprint posted a fourth-quarter loss of $29.5 billion last week following a writedown, and said it will probably lose 1.2 million subscribers in the first quarter. It also announced a monthly package of unlimited calls, text messages and walkie- talkie services for $89.99. Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint is the third-biggest U.S. wireless carrier, and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA unit is the fourth-biggest operator in the country.
``In such a price war scenario, we think T-Mobile would face the most pressure, and Deutsche Telekom would see increased urgency to drive market repair,'' Merrill Lynch said in the report titled ``Walking towards Sprint?''
Merrill Lynch, which reiterated its ``sell'' recommendation on the stock, said it was not aware of any discussions between the parties.
``We neither comment on market speculation nor ideas analysts are toying with,'' Deutsche Telekom spokesman Mark Nierwetberg said by telephone today.
Deutsche Telekom fell 23 cents, or 1.9 percent, to 12.12 euros as of 2:19 p.m. in Frankfurt trading.

+++++++++++

My own thoughts, I have been having a few issues with my TMO 8100 and have been thinking about switching to a CDMA carrier. However, if TMO actually acquired Sprint/ Nextel, that would be awesome in my opinion as Sprint has been a front runner on the upcoming WI-Max network having invested $5 billion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX

Sorry, I just dont get it...other than the fact that Sprints market value @ $7USD a share probably looks like a bargain in Germany, but...

Did no one learn anything following the Sprint / Nextel debacle? Bigger is not necessarily better....and didn't Sprint just write off the value of the ENTIRE Nextel purchase this quarter?

Rant ended....

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~they could do that but they don't have the backing to keep up with the main 3 tmo I've heard can barely stand with verision or at&t I mean my boss has had all 3 and hasent changed since at&t says they have the best coverage he's found

This would be both Amazing and a disaster at the same time.
TMO could definitely use the better coverage areas that sprint/nextel offer. Although, as many know when a company gets to large its prices go up and customer service goes way down. *cough* AT&T/cingular *cough*

as a sprint customer, it might be good. i still havent had any problems with sprint in the past 7 years, but if i could have GSM and CDMA that would be nice. maybe even unlocking my 8830 to move on both networks. that would be hot.

it would be neat to have PPT, as useless as it really is for most people, that is one thing that att has over tmo. also, sprint/nextel has a all thier high speed ducks in a row, maybe tmobile could capitalize??

all i know, is that this is probably not gonna happen, and if it did, tmobile has a pretty good history in not jumping into something (3G for example) until they know if it's gonna work right.

no, bigger is not better, but, when it comes to coverage/towers, that is something the comsumer really looks at.

my 2 cents...i guess...haha...

But, even if they acquired SprinTel, how would the technologies be combined into one? Sprint uses CDMA, Nextel uses iDEN and T-Mo uses GSM/EDGE.

It would be a horrible move, on the level with Sprint/Nextel. They learned nothing from the attempted merger of two totally separate technologies, apparently.

On the other hand, Sprint has to do something. They're shedding subscribers like a supermodel leaving an all you can eat buffet, and they have one of the smallest coverage areas of all the US carriers.

If they don't merge with someone soon, they'll be out of business, IMO.

Hmmm..... very interesting. From one perspective it makes no sense, but then again, one never knows exactly what they may have up their sleeves..... never say never, or impossible for that matter.

Just when one least expects it the most unlikely occurs!

I could see TMO possibly picking up Nextel, should they spin it off. TMO has almost no business market, and the combination of Nextel with TMO customer service could be killer. Nextel used to have kickass coverage everywhere, and recently not so much. I have harbored the theory that sprint relocated many of the nextel towers to existing sprint towers (anybody on the sprinttel tech side know?) If they kept the iDen focused on business clients and TMO on the family side it could work out nicely. I think the split networks would work out nicely for TMO, since their 1900Mhz spectrum and tower placements don't provide the business class coverage Nextel USED to.

yeah....maybe the "SprinTel" could now be the tmo business side, i know PTT is huge in the regard.

either way, never say never, but this is probably never gonna happen.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~this would be smart for tmo because they would have more competion with vz and att. They could go with gsm. That would increase their coverage on some part. The cost is what there going to look at so we will have to wait and see.
