TMO and blackberry

Does anyone know that TMO started to force data plan with all blackberry model? I called TMO to upgrade my pearl to 8900 and was shoked to know that TMO now does not sell any blackberry without data plan.

Are they planing on loosing their ground against Verizon or AT&T?

This came out a month or so ago...and I agree its disappointing....they still sell a few models with out data (pearl & flip I believe). If you don't want a data plan I suggest you check Craigs List - with the in store price down below $200 now the open market price should drop as well.

lol .. well some people do not need the data plan. they prob use it for organization of schedule and can download and install apps/games via DM ... so I can def understand, but with that being said, TMO has the cheapest bb data plan available, so maybe that is why they started requiring them?

well, with Wi-Fi available at home and at work, I usually do not need data plan. Also, I am not one of those addict who would have their BB in their hand all the time.

The official word we got was that they were going to start requiring a data plan on all data devices (not just BB's) but in the process they were going to begin eliminating mail in rebates on those devices and provide them instore with the stipulation of 6 months (minimum) of service or the discounts were chargeable to the customer. I remember reading the memo a month or so back mentioning the elimination of rebates on BB's and having higher in store discounts instead. I know that on the independent side you still can get a BB without data but will not get anywhere near the discounts you do with.

When I got my 8900, the sales people at the store were arguing amongst themselves about whether it was a boneheaded idea because T-Mo was going to do it like GaryF said, to all their smartphones, except for a very select few. I agree with Cherri that there are some people who may not necessarily need the data plan, but it's one of those things where I feel you really just can't fully utilize it without one.

I couldn't imagine having a blackberry without a data plan. I use the messengers and web way too much.

I use my pearl with the $5.99 T-Mobile web plan. It allows for basic web access (wap), but I am finding that I can use the gmail and gmaps applications (those did not work for me in the past). I actually blocked out the message service because I don't care for that enough to pay for it! I have enough with plain old email and if someone feels the urgency to tell me something they'll better use their phone like a phone (I have unlimited minutes!). All that said, I recognize the blackberry's messenger is pretty neat.

With Wi-Fi, I do not see any reason why I should have a data plan. Of course, I cannot use gmail or google map application but what is laptop for which I carry everywhere? Anyways, another T-Mo rep told me that they are going to force everyone with smart phones to have data plan. I guess they are learning from AT&T and Verizon.

AT&T do require data plans for ALL their smartphones as well as Sprint (at least in NY).

As many have said, a smartphone without a dataplan is like getting a car without gas, you can use it, kinda, but its otherwise pointless lol.
