TMNT (the original) Vs Pok?mon

Okay, i know that the topic of this thread doesn't seem to make much sense. Some of you might be thinking "wut, what do these shows have in common that justifies an entire thread dedicated to comparing them?". Well here is what im thinking: Pok?mon was basically the TMNT of the late 90's-early 00's, or conversely, TMNT was basically the Pok?mon of the late 80's,-early 90's. They were both:

* Extremely popular fads among children of their time
* Based on eariler incarnations in other media (in TMNT's case, the original Mirage comics, in Pok?mons case, the original Nintendo games)
* Heavily merchandise-driven (in fact, they were both but one cog in a giant wheel of a franchise)
* They both belong to a sort of "lighthearted adventure/comedy for children" genre.
* Despite thier massive popularity among children, they were/are generally considered to be of pretty poor quailty among most adult animation fans.

So yup, there you have it. Of course, the first and foremost reason i wanted to make this thread if because this question is something i have been thinking about for some time now, and i am really curious to see what others have to say about it.

Naturally, with both these shows pretty much being the definition of childhood among certain generations, any evaluation of them is extremely likely to fall victim to the old "nostalgia glases". Anyone who grew up with TMNT is quite likely to proclaim that show supperior without flinching, and vice versa for anyone who grew up with Pok?mon. The most neutral judge between the shows would probably be someone who was already an adult by the time both shows premiered. However, i like to think that i perhapes belong to at least the second best age group when it comes to give these shows a fair comparasion, since i belong to the generation that grew up with both shows. Being born in 1986, TMNT belongs to the early part of my childhood and Pok?mon belongs to the last few years of it. So i guess you could say that i have a nostalgic bias towards both the shows, which should cancel each other out, right?

Anyway, after watching a whole lot of episodes of these toons recently, i have come to the conclusion that neither one can be called a good show by any stretch. They are both bland and highly repetative, and features dialoge peppered with exposition and horribly lame puns. Nevertheless, here is what each respective show has got going for it in comparassion to the other:

TMNT has:

* Characters with a lot more personailty than the characters in Pok?mon does. Each major character in TMNT has his own distinct personailty, and it's usually a pretty likeable one. Many characters in Pok?mon however (inluding it's mian hero, Ash, which is a very bad sign) truly has, as the Nostalgia Critic pointed out, "the personailty of sandpaper". For instance, appart from when he glomps over ladies, anything said by Brock feels like it might as well have been said by whatever female concubine Ash has traveling with him at the moment.

* More catchy background music. Not that Pok?mon's music is bad though.

Pok?mon has

* Better continuity. Whereas TMNT is, much like most American 80's cartoons, absolutely littered with plot wholes, Pok?mon is actually pretty free of these.

* More consistant animation. As is common in anime, the characters in Pok?mon tend to at least stay in model regardless of how limited the animation is otherwise. TMNT on the other hand... oh lord. However, the bright color scheme in both shows makes them a delight to look at (even when they their content makes the brain want to gag :P).

So that's my little mini-review. An all in all, i'd say that the better show is... Pok?mon. Not by much, but yeah. The main reason for this is that TMNT just has so many obvious mistakes in it. Story-wise with it's endless plotholes and deus-ex-machimas, and look-wise with it's of ever-so-often of-model characters, as well as coloring-and lip-synching mistakes. All in all, the blandness of TMNT seems to stem from the makers of the show simply not caring that much about it. Every other episode feels like something the producers threw together in about two hours the day before it aired. Pok?mon however seems more, well, "bland by design", if that makes any sense. It's like, yeah, it's not very exciting nor very funny, but at least the people behind it make sure that Ash and Co doesn't aquire some kind of "can transport people to other dimensions at will"-machine in one episode and then forgett about it in the next, you know?

You make some good points with your observation. While the original 'TMNT' series had the typical 80's qualities, and production values, the 2003 series had much better qualities than it's predecessor. (Computer coloring software prevents the problem of Leo, speaking lines that were meant for Mikey due to tight schedules to get an episode done.) Compared to 'Pokemon', the 80's 'TMNT' had better humor that most older people could appreciate. (To a certain point at times)

While I never could get into 'Pokemon', myself, and give it some of the blame for changing the weekday afternoon/saturday morning landscape to be riddled with 'toyetic anime' imports, I'll agree with you that it's much more consistent with it's animation, and character designs. (Mostly because Japan does good work, and they used computer coloring software later on.)

The funny thing is both TMNT and Pokemon were my childhood fads and I still love them both.

I was a kid with Turtlemania hit in the late 80's, and I was a huge fan of the show, toys, videogames, movies, etc. It was fun back then and I love watching the DVDs of it now.

I was around 12ish when Pokemon started airing in the U.S, so I was already almost out of Pokemon's target demographic. Even so like most people, I got hooked at the start and was part of the big Pokemon fad too.

I think the difference is TMNT ended and had a new cartoon since, whereas Pokemon is the SAME SHOW and is still doing.

Of course Pokemon changed drastically since the first season, and I really want it to end, but who knows. The length of Pokemon really killed it from being as rewatchable as TMNT was.

Well I don't know. I say this to a first time viewer or someone trying to explain it to a newbie, TMNT is a lot easier to understand. These mutant turtles fight bad guys. While Pokemon can be a bit complecated to an outsider.

Ever seen the South Park episode in which they parody Pokemon, when Stan's was watching an episode of the show. I can picture real parents having the same reaction.

"Are those stupid things suppose to robots or animals or what?"
"I don't know, but I suddenly want to own them all."

Other major differences:

Pokemon is anime.
TMNT is not.

Pokemon is dubbed.
TMNT is not.

Pokemon is based on a video game franchise.
TMNT is based on a comic.

Pokemon has had continual video game franchise support.
TMNT has not.

Pokemon has a passive violence that seems to avoid contact even in battle.
TMNT is visceral and violent.

Pokemon has pocket monsters.
TMNT has ninja.

Pokemon has a happy, friendly quality.
TMNT has from the very beginning had a dark tone and feel.

Pokemon never had a live-action movie.
TMNT had three.

Pokemon has a vast, epic universe of characters, storylines and continuity.
TMNT is dwarfed on all three counts.

Pokemon was created in Japan and was hugely popular in both Japan and the US, and it's still going strong.
TMNT was created in the US and it's international fame was short-lived. Other attempts have been made to revive the franchise, but they have also been temporary.

So to be perfectly honest, the only thing I see that they have in common is that they have both been cultural phenoms.

As for which is the better show, it depends on which series you're talking about. But from my adult male perspective, TMNT kicks Pokemon's Butt-erfree by a long shot.

While I didn't get a lot of the 80's TMNT, which is probably because I was born in 1994, I have watched some of it, both on the internet, and on TV.
Thank god for syndication.

However, I did grow up with Pokemon, which of course has made quite an impact on my view of the series.

It's quite hard to compare the two series. Of course, they are (or, were in TMNT's case) both extremely popular, and both rely a lot on action and humor. And their marketing, of course.

However, fact is, that Pokemon is still going strong, with the exact same show, while TMNT occasionally gets a revival in different styles, which means that Pokemon knows what to do in order to get their target audiences' attention, while TMNT is still experimenting, which, IMO, is not a bad thing.

As for which show is better, I don't really know. But I do think Ash/Satoshi has gone from a lovable semi-stupid newbie to a generic hero character.

That's not true. While Pokemon has more video games than TMNT, the turtles had a ton of games in the late 80's through the mid-to-late 90's

I agree with both statements. Even though I prefer the original TMNT series to the newer one, both of them are better than Pokemon, and it's not even close IMO.

I meant "continual" in a literal sense, basically meaning "constant" or "consistent." So my statement remains true, in my opinion.

Although TMNT has had a fair share of video game support, it has not been anything as prolific or constantly supported by video game releases as Pokemon.

I think Pokemon fans and gamers would also generally agree that Pokemon's video games overall have been consistently fun (i.e. addictive) to play, while TMNT has only had a few really good titles by comparison. Pokemon also doesn't have a 10-year gap between releases.
