Episode 5.11: Past Present
Original Air Date: April 19, 2008
Written by Joe Kelly

Previously on TMNT: After their hectic battle with the Shredder, the turtles retreat to April's apartment. While Karai convalesces, the turtles hear the story of how they first met the Ninja Tribunal.

This week on TMNT: With their enemies routed for the moment, the Shredder and his heralds turn their attention to...taking over the world! Step one: Turn Manhattan into a more of a hellish nightmare than usual. Step two: Use the power of "keystones" covertly set up over the city by the mystics in order to increase the Shredder's power to even sicker levels. Also, Karai wakes up, and is faced with a choice, and Veronica Taylor finally gets something to do.

Damn! Their not showing it in my area because of the Pope's visit. Worse of all they their probably going to skip over the episode come next week and just air the next episode.

Well if you couldn't catch it on the TV tube, there's another tube its currently on. If 4kids was pre-empted because of the Pope for anyone else, make note of that.

"Past and Present" is the title, the episode was pretty decent but for some reason it didn't click with me as much as previous episodes. I really liked the Karai/Chaplin and Karai/April exchanges though, those were great. :D

I didn't think much of this episode when I originally saw it--it seemed to me that they could have been eliminated, and the season would have gone by unaffected. While it still seems superflous now, I appreciate it a lot more with the second viewing.

Random thoughts:
  • After almost a season's worth of drab-looking episode--Lap of the Gods was the last real good-looking episode, in my book--this one takes the animation up a notch, which is always nice to see.
  • While the animation may have taken a hit from previous seasons, the character designs haven't. The sentries guarding the keystones looked quite cool.
  • April returns with a bang: the initial scene with Karai is one of her best in the whole series. And we finally see her wearing her track outfit from the opening.
  • I'm taking bets: is the mayor dead, or not? I hope he is--this arc needs some sort of body count, even if it's only a fairly minor recurring character. His death could be a good plot point, too: what if his replacement turns out to be someone who isn't as willing to look the other way when it comes to organized crime?
  • Yet another example of the Elementals' plotting. It's nice to see that the've been working at this for a while and that resurrecting the Shredder isn't just a spur-of-the-moment thing.
Next episode: the beginning of the end, as the first big era of Lloyd Goldfine and 4Kids' TMNT ends. I'll be making an extra-large talkback for it, so keep your eyes on it!

That's how I generally feel about this episode. I mean it was ok and all, but you could honestly skip it and not really miss much of importance. Aside from Karai healing and Chaplin returning, there's not much that happened here that couldn't have been done in the first 1 minute of the next episode.

They both have their appeal. One is more martial arts oriented and Demon Shredder floats in the air, shoots green energy beams and turns into a Dragon.

I kind of prefer Utrom Shredder since we've known him longer, and I like more realistic martial arts action than anime-esque power battles and such.

Oh, I like Utrom Shredder as well it's just that what I like about Demon Shredder is that he's intent on completing his goal and it's succeding, that's one of the things I like about villains in general.

That's not Karai's style, that's something her daddy would do but not her.

She's not a bwahahahaha baddie, she's only the TMNT's enemy because she feels they betrayed her when she asked them to spare her father and let him go. And despite being upset at daddy's trial when she saw all the horrible things he had done, Season 4 decided to take the "former friend becomes enemy" route with her...but we haven't seen her do anything besides plan her move against the turtles, no evil stuff like her daddy.

The Karai/April scene was cool...but I thought it was laughable that April thinks she can kick Karai's ass (even though I think her protective nature over her "brothers" is cute).

I think hearing that they saved her life is making Karai thinking twice about their feud.

Chaplin's love and loyalty towards Karai is so cute, and did anyone notice the warm smile she gave him when he started to pick her up off the bed?! They'd make a great couple, he's the perfect guy for her...especially since he's buffed up a little too!

Karai saved Leo's life, but quickly implied she only did that because they have a temporary truce...I think she's starting to rethink her actions and whether or not they truly are her enemy.

I thought I spotted Officer Eastman, cool seeing him again!

Yeah they kinda work off each other well. They fill in for each others shortcoming so to speak. Not that Karai is dumb but Chaplin is obviously one of the smartest guy around.

I never got the vibe that Karai and Chaplin were macking on each other (mind you, I don't watch action cartoons for kissy stuff); I may have seen signs here and there that Chaplin likes Karai, but I never got the feeling that it was was mutual; the impression I got was that Karai just sees Chaplin as just another minion and nothing more. So I can't say that I actively support Karai/Chaplin, but that's a better idea to me than pairing Karai up with Leo, like some people I know like to do. At least with Chaplin, there wouldn't be the obstacle of dating outside their species.

I just noticed something...Karai's not wearing the red lipstick anymore!

She's come back to the Light Side (she only started wearing the red lipstick, from what I recall, in Season 4).

Sorry...I just realized that and had to say something.:D

I ship Karai/Leo and Karai/Chaplin (but ONLY in the 2003 universe).

She works well with both to me!

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, though. While we know she's not a mass murderer, she's never had a problem with the Foot's M.O. of blackmail, extortion, theft, and assasination, and I think we can safely assume that these have continued since the Oroku Saki's exile, whether we've seen them or not.

Given that Karai has just gotten over having her stomach sliced open (at least, that's where I assume the Shredder got her), I'd say that April would almost certainly win in a fight between the two.

In my opinion:

Karai/Chaplin=OK. I'm not passionate about it, but I've heard worse ships.

Karai/Leo=bestiality. Big no-no. Sorry, but any of the Turtles with a human equates to zoo lust, and I can't get behind that.

Hmm, another underwhelming episode. You know when season 4 ended( which was an awesome season ), it left with a big cliffhanger, and I remember being really excited and annoyed that we got the lame FF instead. However, although this season has been leaps and bounds better than FF, I can't help feel disappointed in it. I dont know, something about the magic in this season seems like a cheat. Take for example when they fought the mystic...uh..robots? They make them out to be this big threat, than with a minute left( in their time ) they just power up and shoot them and thats it. Not to mention True Shredder...is so boring. All he does is yell and shoot energy out with Silver Surfer results. The worst part about him I think, is hes so all powerful, yet never comes off as a threat. Probably because outside of turning NY into weird pseudo Japan/ Demon Manhattan, he hasn't really done a whole lot.

Don't be such a stick in the mud. Leo's a mutated turtle closer to a human than to any ordinary animal. For one thing he's sentient. That's no different than Captain Kirk bonking the Green Space Babe (Orion chicks are so hot...very manipulative though).

Plus the Turtles are the only ones of their species... kinda makes it impossible to have any relationship NOT being inter-species.

That being said I don't think there's much chance for Leo and Karai. When she first appeared they had a chance but when she chose the path of revenge she kinda burned that bridge if you ask me.
