Episode 5.10: Fathers & Sons
Original Air Date: April 12, 2008
Written by Roland Gonzalez

Previously on TMNT: The turtles and the Foot fought the demon Shredder and his elementals, achieving only the narrowest of victories--if you could call rescuing a severely wounded Karai and having been let escape a victory.

This week on TMNT: While recovering from their battle with the Shredder, the turtles listen to the tale of how Splinter first met the Ancient One and Ninja Tribunal. Much to the turtles' surprise, they play a crucial part in the story, despite the fact that they remember none of it.

This episode was cute. The buck teeth design was somewhat bothersome, but I do like how they play up the family aspect in these episodes.

Man, April can't get a break in this season, can she? She still hasn't had a single line all season.

Alright, I'm INCREDIBLY confused.

The commercials say there's three more episodes left, but all that's left is a two-parter and that's it.

Where the hell are they getting this extra episode count from? Possibly airing Insane in the Membrane?

No, this is pretty obviously a retcon; Splinter acted as surprised as anyone by the introduction of the Utroms and the dual revelations that Yoshi was a guardian and that the Shredder was an Utrom. While one can fanwank it, saying that this is just yet another thing Splinter kept close to his vest, it's still somewhat inconsistent with the way things were depicted in the first two seasons--fortunately, Splinter was already out of action during the decapitation scene in RtNY pt. 3, since the retcon really couldn't have worked otherwise.

All in all, a good cool-down episode. The turtle tots were much more adorable here than in their last appearance, and Splinter and the Ancient One were as father-like as we've ever seen them.

Random thoughts:

Wow: I love the level of detail in the Tribunal Monastery courtyard--that can't be easy to draw.

I've liked all of the Shredder's lesser mooks seen this season, and the one here is no exception--for a one-shot character, he's got a lot of personality. His voice was also spot on.

I also really liked The Ancient One in this episode, from his initial response to seeing Splinter, to his smile when the turtles go to bed, to the way he absolutely trounced the bone demon.

I'd really like to know how Splinter managed to retrieve both Yoshi's body and his sword (as seen in the Season 3 finale); ninja skills or no ninja skills, it sounds almost impossible. And I liked seeing Yoshi get a funeral of sorts here.

Yeah...he knew the Utrom Shredder was a fake Shredder, but not that he was an alien! The Ancient knew apparantly though.

I'm guessing nobody really care about Yoshi's ashes and belonging...he didn't have any family and the Utroms are probably not the kind to give funerals and stuff... maybe his fellow Guardians were gonna do it? Maybe they burried the jar and sword and Splinter just recovered them?

I kind of doubt that Laird would allow such potential plot holes to slip through considering that he is executive producer of the show. If anything, this episode tied up a couple of good loose ends. Namely:

-the Tribunal's position on the Utrom Shredder
-the turtles getting their masks for the first time

The only thing I didn't like about the episode is the fact that the turtles had buck teeth. Um...I thought turtles were supposed to be toothless.
