Episode 5.09: New World Order, pt. II
Original Air Date: April 5, 2008
Written by Matthew Drdek

Previously on TMNT: The demon Shredder is finally brought back to live, and is ready to begin where he left off. But after he finds out that Karai is sullying the good name of the "Shredder" brand, the orignal Oroku Saki decides to hand over a cease-and-desist the only way he knows how: violence. Cause lawyers would have cost too much.

This week on TMNT:

It's gonna be wild.

Gotta love slash marks that don't even cut Karai's clothes. :p

Karai Vs. Shredder is probably one of the better if not one of the top 10 battles in the show. It was really exciting, and I liked that Karai got a few good hits on him and he wasn't so invincible. Watching Shredder pull the sword out of himself was awesome.

Dr. Chaplain was awesome in this episode, amusing how the Turtles just forget about him and leave him there. Haha. Gee, did they pay Casey's VA just to say that one line at the end of the episode? They could have just had him stand there and have someone else say, "There's a storm coming."

The Turtles transforming into dragons at the end was interesting to say the least, but I'm not too keen on it. It seems whatever magic powers they get aren't used again though, considering they never do this stuff in Fast Forward.

Nice homage to Karai's first appearance in the Mirage comics at the end when she's wearing nothing but the black skintight jumpsuit.

Who was there blood on? I don't recall Karai showing any blood, her shirt didn't even rip from the slash wound!

If you're talking about Shredder, I don't really count that blue ooze in his chest as "blood."

I wonder if Laird was inspired by Spawn when he re-designed the Demon Shredder. I'm loving this arc so far however I'm reminded how short this season is, essentially 12 eps. I wonder if they'll exorcise the Shredder Tengu from Oroku Saki's body.

There were a few drops of blood when the sword snake was beheaded, but that's all--nothing to really get excited about.

Random thoughts:
  • It seems Chaplin took one or two levels in badass during his abscence, which is awesome. I like how he's still a geek, but is less awkward about it. I really hope the character continues to appear in season 7.
  • Given how awesome the episode generally was, I really wish it had been animated better. Some spots looked really, really rough, which is really a shame.
  • Zombies! Magic guns! Zombies getting liquified by magic guns! Fun!
  • I'm not sure what to think of the Shredder's suddent disinterest in the turtles. While it's necessary for plot purposes--you can't have him die yet, but you can't have him kill the turtles, either--and it fits the character's world conqueror A.D.D., it still seems somewhat contrived.
It wouldn't be the first time. Given how little screen time Casey and April get this season, I'll take what I can get. Besides, it's the kind of line that would sound weird coming from the turtles, and everyone else, like Casey, had just appeared there.

It was explained in one of the episodes that the acolytes' Naruto-style magic Ninjitsu powers stem from the medallions--lose those, lose the powers--for now, anyway: I wouldn't rule out one or more of the acolytes actually learning those jutsu for themselves once they're older.

I'd chalk that up to 2 things: first when the Turtles and Splinter got zapped to the future they didn't have any clothes on.

Two and more likely since the Ninja Tribunal season was pretty much canceled the "creative heads" probably didn't want anything to reference the events of the season.

I don't know why, but it always makes me chuckle when the Shredder calls the Turtles "cretins." I can't explain why, it just doesn't sound like the kind of word he'd use.

Actually, the evidence indicates the opposite, that Season 5's "cancelation" was ignored during the production of Fast Forward. All in all, there are tons of references to it--from Turtle Titan's new costume, to the Sewer Sled among Cody's trophies, to the whole Lap of the Gods scene in the journals, to--like veemonjosh said, the ending to Graduation Day. The reason for the medallion's abscence is explained in upcoming episodes so there's really no need to overthink it.

Speaking of this, I really like the dialogue for the new/old Shredder, particularly his insults--nothing like the Utrom Shredder. "Poor pathetic little nothings," in particular, is awesome.

I'll be compeltly honest here, Graduation Day is one of the 3 Fast Forward episodes that I haven't seen yet. And I'm honestly surprised to hear that they did reference the "Ninja Tribunal" season.

And as Ian just reminded me, there's an whole five minute scene in the Fast Forward episode "The Journal" that takes place entirely in the Lap of the Gods.

Mikey's "Awkward!" after he saved Karai was really funny.

Chaplain's got a crush on Karai! How cute :p:anime: Can't blame him...she's an attractive and athletic young woman with lots of charisma...weird voice though and she can be a bit mean recently... I liked her better when she wasn't all revenge-y.

Can't wait for next week's episode... one because I want to see Karai's reaction to being saved by the turtle and two because the first meeting of the Ancient One with a post-mutation Splinter? That ougtha be interesting don't you think? Younger and inexperienced Splinter for bonus points.
