Episode 1.23: D.N.A. is Thicker Than Water
Original Air Date: October 6, 2007
Written by: Roland Gonzalez

Previously on Fast Forward: The turtles realize that their old enemy, Baxter Stockman, is alive in 2105, and seeking revenge on President Bishop for an old crime. Fortunately, thanks to the turtles' intervention, he recants, and Baxter gets what he's wanted for the last century: a normal life.

This week on Fast Forward: During an attack on Cody's penthouse, Bizarro Leo, to the surprise of everyone, saves Cody's life! Now on the mend in Cody's appartment, Odranoel gets more than he bargained for.

I saw this on the DVD, it was a pretty good episode. It was certainly nice to see them add some depth to Dark Leo's character.

Of course since some of us know how this Season ends it really makes you wonder if anything here will be wrapped up. It'll be a shame if this plotline is left lingering, but since these writers almost always re-touch on plotlines from old seasons, I shouldn't be too concerned. Or at least I hope not.

A good episode that relies too heavily on a worn and predictable storyline done many times over. If the writers had freshened it up or tried a new angle it might have spiced things up a bit.

3/5 shells.

Spoiler comments for those who've seen the remaining episodes:

it's the last dark turtles episode, and while it's not a finite ending for them, it does show a glimpse of where things can go. I'm perfectly happy with this, but if next season's revamping does give them a chance to come back, so much the better

Sad this is the last Dark Turtle episode. If they could come back they could be an even greater threat due to what Dark Leo learned. Team Work is a teams greatest strength, by teaching that to the Dark Turtles they can be a much bigger threat to the regular turtles.

Ah the old scorpion and the frog story. Good use of it.

Nice to see Dark Leo did learn something from the experience but if that's the last we see the Dark Turtles then that was a bit of a waste.

Well it probably wasn't meant to be the last of the Dark Turtles, I'm pretty sure these "NEW" episodes are actually left overs from Season 1. There was most likely going to be more from them in Season 2, but apparently it was scrapped to go another direction with the series, a direction that still hasn't been decided on yet.

I don't think we've seen the last of the Dark Turtles for good. I know this season is complete, but they didn't say that NO Fast Forward characters may be shown again in the following season.

Heck, I fully expect Cody to guest star in a one or two part episode next season. There is further potential here with the Dark Turtles, I'm sure we'll see them used again in some form.

Agreed. It was a great episode. However, I do feel that it wouldn't be right to just end the Dark Turtles appearance on this show right here and now. There is gotta be a way for Laird to find a way around this.

You know what I really hated about Fast Forward? They finally came up with good stories, good plotline, and an actual motive for the show just as they decided to cancell it. Now, if they decided to do this instead of frivillous episodes like Class of 2105 or Triple Threat (forget the name) they could have made a much better show.

That said, I heard about this episode all the way back in April from Mike S. (the voice of Leo) himself. And I thought it sounded like a great episode. it was. Now if only the rest of the show could have been this good, it could have continued.

I agree, they shouldn't have written FF with the idea that it was going to go on longer than 1 season, it made the pacing feel off.

Bishop should have had a LOT more episodes at the beginning. Poor Starlee was also pretty useless in retrospect. Baxter could have used another episode.

And of course this whole Darius Dunn and Dark Turtles arc really needs some closure. As I said, I hope some of this is somehow resolved next season.

meh, it passed for entertainment. Of course Raph owned this episode.
I know I've heard the "Scorpion-Frog" fable before but I can't recall. Anyone remember if this tale was told on another animated series many years ago? Perhaps the TMNT series of the 80's.

Poor Starlee doesn't even appear in these last six episodes. What's up with that??

different question: remember those 10 episodes of FF that were in production before they were halted? does anyone know why only 10 were ordered (as opposed to a season package of 13 or 26)?

Its an old, widely-known story, so it could be anywhere, really. It's inclusion here held back the episode for me, precisely because it's such a cliche.

Darius Dun seems to be channeling Sonic's Dr. Eggman this episode, which is amusing to see. The detail of having his battle suit mimicking his movements is a nice touch.

Good question: I have no idea. It's not particularly unheard of, though; X-Men: Evolution's second season had a similarly-weird seventeen episodes, while it's fourth and final one had nine (although that was done so they could get to the 52-episode limit).

The only closures they need have to do with Darius and the Dark Turtles.

In two eps, Sh'Okanabo and Viral get killed on Moon Base Bishop in the ep "The Day of Awakening", while Torbin Zixx in "The Zixxth Sense" tries to con the Turtles into getting a teleporting device from one of his clients and delivering it to another of his clients (the Triceraton Zuko from "The Fall of Darius Dunn"), but gets conned himself.

I think it was because 4kids planned on airing 10 more FF eps with the 12 Lost Season eps, and altogether that would have made an almost complete season of 26 eps.

But that idea ws screwed over because Playmates hated the fact that FF toys sold poorly, so those 10 extra episodes were scraped. Its screwed over somewhat because now 4kids only has those 12 Ninja Tribunal eps to air on TV to bridge the gap till the 2008 season.

Actually, the toys sold well initially. it was the big box expensive action feature toys that killed the line. The toys were pretty much pulled when the Movie toys came out, due to the fact retailors didn't think that both lines could co-exist.

Peter Laird was the one that shot down the rest of FF.

[oldspoiler]Torbin Zixx got a somewhat lackluster closure in the final episode (which takes place after Day of Awakening but one gets the distinct feeling after seeing it that as far as final eps go that WASN'T supposed to be "it").

"Day of Awakening" handles the final fates of Shokonabo and Viral - which SHOULD have been the final episode given that it closes out otwo of the major villians of this series. The only reason it probably isn't the finale is because Zixxth Sense MAY take place after it in continuity afterwards, but I don't think it does.[/oldspoiler]

My guess is that Darius Dunn and the Dark Turtles will be handled at the start of the new series when they return home since A) Dunn's fate seems to tie in directly to Cody Jones - and you know he's gonna be the source of the Turtle's return trip home - B) the Dark Turtles fate ties directly into Dunn and theirs is the only real fate left fully ambiguous thanks to this episode and C) Dunn is more or less one of the main villians of the series next to Shokonabo. It'd be both a fitting end to Fast Forward and good starting point for the new series whatever they decide to do.

I'd love to see a proper end to Fast Forward and it's storyline but I don't think it's going to happen, I wish they'd make direct to dvd episodes even if the just made like a five part storyline that showed how the guys got back home and wraps up all the lose plot lines.

I was sorry to see the Fast Forward toys go so fast when the figures first came out all they had were their main weapons and no other accesseries then when the Battle wheel and the bike came out the figures inculded with them had the same weapons so I planned on getting them when I had some extra money, but I lost my job and toys were not a high priority once I got a new one the Fast Forward toys were pushed away for the new movie figures then, a couple months later I picked up Dark Don and Dark Mike at Wal-Mart for $3 a piece and last month the local Toys R Us put the Fast Forward toys back out and I picked up Leo, Mike, and Dark Leo. Then last week I was picking up soem stuff at Dollar General and I was shocked to see that they were now stocking the TMNT:Fast Forward line for $5 a piece and I picked up Dark Ralph, then later that week I picked up Ralph and Don. So I'm happy to say that I finally have all the Fast Forward figures that I wanted.

For the record, "Zixxth Sense" takes place before "The Day of Awakening", not after it.

I'm pretty sure the reverse order of those two episodes was just a mistake with Comcast, since the DVDs have them in the proper order (besides, "Day of Awakening" is a MUCH better episode to end the series on).
