Episode 7.03 Something Wicked
Original air date: September 27, 2008
Written by Mike Ryan

Previously on Back to the Sewer: The turtles save Casey from his brainwashing karate teacher (and Foot member) Khan.

This week, on Back to the Sewer: The turtles make their way into the internets to see what fate has befallen Splinter, and if possible, rescue him. But what is the Cyber Shredder, and how dangerous will he prove to be?

The episode was supposed to be on at 6:30 this morning but The CW popped in some old episodes of Tom and Jerry Tales from back in the summer running from 5-6 pushing the east coast 8AM-10AM shows up an hour. Since the shows that were supposed to air from 10AM-12PM on the east coast are played from 8AM-10AM here in Maryland, wonder how this schedule mix-up will screw up the airings of Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's and the other shows?

I'm digging the Cyberspace look. It takes the show back to the style of the 2003 series if you notice the eyes.

With Mikey saying that no one has entered in the Internet, he doesn't know about the other characters that have been in the 'Net. Examples: Big Guy and Rusty, Carmen and Juni from Spy Kids 3D, Tai and Matt when they battle against Diaboromon.

Wonder if the turtles will be on the Internet for this one episode or will they stay on the 'Net for a while?

He said that no Turtle has been there. And Mikey also uttered a name we have not heard in a long time, when he said to Cyber Shredder "Later, Shredhead." The last time we heard the Shredhead name was in the original series.

Was a fairly good episode.

Not much to say really, but I hope not too many episodes are spent in cyberspace. I hope they collect more Splinter bits off-screen. :)

Oh, and this episode was basically waving the toy prices for the figures. You can practically read $14.99 above those cars they were driving. Ironically enough, no cyberturtle toys are in stores at the moment. Oh Playmates...how you confound me.

I believe they've called him Shredhead several times in the new series, actually.

And yes, this episode did feel like one big toy commercial. 4Kids definitely has the gimmick it needs to drive up sales. Cyber Shredder is awesome, though, and just as we thought, he's a backup file of the Utrom Shredder's data mixed with data from Viral. I wonder if he'll find a way to rescue Ch'rell from the asteroid later in the season.

Sigh... I set it up to record in 3 Different places, and each one failed (one due to user error, as I set it to record fox by accident). Is it streaming online officially anywhere? You'd think it'd be on the 4kids site, but apparently not yet..

Unfortunately, the toys are probably going to look nothing like they did on TV. *shakes head*

Anyway, I liked how thye have the no eyese thing in the cyber world. That still rocks.

I thought the animimation in this episode was better than the first two. Also, the cyber design was very remenisent of the 2k3 show. I really don't think that the Cyber Shredder will rescue Ch'rell as he believes himself to be the true Shredder. Perhaps Hun or Karai will rescue Ch'rell and we will have that cool looking "Shredder War" we caught a glimpse of in the first episode. After three episodes it looks really good. Too bad its on CW and they ususally start rerunnig episodes after the first three. Here's hoping since 4Kids is at the helm and they'll change that.

Well we are getting a new episode next week but this is a thirteen episode season so they will have to put the show on reruns soon to make it last.

Well, he acknowledges that he's the data from the Utrom Shredder and not the genuine article. But perhaps he really doesn't have a reason to rescue his corporeal form when he can try taking over the real world for himself.

I doubt Karai has the tech to save her father, and if she did, you'd figure she would have tried back in season 4 to do so.

As for Hun, well, things are going swimmingly for him, being the boss of an increasingly-successful crime syndicate, so the last thing he'd probably want is to be back under the thumb of the Shredder.

Next week we're getting a new episode, and its in standard New York from what the preview says.

I hope if we do go back into the cyberworld, its only for one or so more episodes. Keep in mind they can collect Splinter data off-screen, I very much doubt they're going to constantly show them going back there and avoiding Shredder over and over.

Also, Cyber Shredder can't leave cyberspace, which is why he talked about their portal at the end. Whenever he can leave, I doubt we'll see any more of the cyber theme for those of you who are worried about that.

So when the turtles enter the internet they are no longer green, but more of a negative-type color (except for their bandanas). When they put on their cybernaut outfits (which are uberlame) they get their "Earthly" pigment back, and lose their pupils. WTFrak?! This was the lamest episode of the three so far. I enjoyed the last episode (with the exception of April all anime-d out), and the first one was half good (God do I hate Cody and Serling and anything FF related).

Random thoughts:

Biggest surprise of the episode: seeing a semi-plausible explanation for the turtles' transformation into data--with a continuity nod, to boot. After all, if the trascendental lathe (that machine that the turtles used to make their weapons in Fast Forward) can transform data into matter, then it's not a stretch to think that it can be modified to the opposite. Plus, it explains how Donny's been able to make the turtles' new toys in a short amount of time. Very efficient detail, from a writing standpoint.

Speaking of efficiency, I also like how the Cyber-Shredder's opening story can be used to justify the Shredder surviving the TCRI explosion in Secret Origins...he didn't. While the plot development leaves a pretty obvious question of why Karai didn't simply clone the little bug back to life after he'd been banished, that will, I hope, be explained later.

I'm still of two minds as to the series' blatant use of previous seasons' footage. It's a blatant money-saving method, of course, and not done subtly at all, and yet I can't help but finding their use of the tactic gutsy. And charming. And reminiscent of the unprofessional vibe of the original comics.

While I'm not enamored of the turtles' cybernaut outfits, I do like the rest of the cyber aesthetic. Original it may not be, but it looks coherent and "fitting". While I don't think the concept has much strengh for more than a handful of episodes--particularly since it's a variation of a concept the series has already used twice--I don't mind it here.

This episode and the last were both written by Mike Ryan, who penned some of the best TMNT episodes and was, I believe, one of the main series' writers. He'd been missing for the past season or two, so I'm glad to see him back.

So far, I'm liking this season quite a bit--better than both seasons 5 and 6, at any rate. Given how nervous I was about it, I am very glad that I can say that.

Does anyone think that after Splinter is rescued, that the Turtles will try and send Serling back to 2105?

I'm wondering if anything has been said about Serling going back to the future, since it doesn't seem like he's here to stay. Maybe in the finale?
