TMNT: Back to the Sewers Pre-talkback

The Ninja Turtles are back with a new season in August, and with a brand new look, no less.

The official TMNT blog updates every Thursday with new character designs, with Splinter presumably coming up next.

Discuss any aspect of the new season here.

I think that's just a misleading impression given by the blog's current format: after all, it's not just a look at the future, but a look at the past, as well--something which new characters, by definition, don't have. Also, given the generally mixed-to-tepid response to Fast Forward--I wouldn't blame 4Kids if they feel a bit wary about favoring yet more new characters over old ones.

No, it's not. Let's go throught it again.

What you are saying here is that Fast Forward season 2 was scrapped while Back to the Sewers (or what eventually became it) was being developed. What I said was that it was scrapped before development for season 8 ever began--the producers had no idea what to do when the ten-episode run ended, except that they wanted the turtles back. Once Fast Forward was cancelled, they were left scrambling.

On another note, I'm glad to see the turtles in the Fast Forward gear. It might mean a less significant update--Viral is the only real new thing, and we already knew she was in--but the fact that we're seeing it gives me hope that the 2105 will still be prominent in the new season--I'm not ready to give up on it just yet. I really hope that when the season does start airing, we'll be able to see new versions of most of the Fast Forward regulars.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Season 2 was cancelled last-minute because 4Kids wanted to push BttS forward.

Sorry about that. >

Someone taped the new "Back to the Sewers" commercial and put it on youtube.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to link to youtube so I won't post the link here, but you can find it easily enough by searching.

I think this is a new commercial because I don't remember some scenes in it, although I could be wrong.

I think my problem is it seems like they're going back to old status quo and nothing feels like it changed.

Hun is still a villain although I imagine he has something of an empire now, Baxter is still around and assumingly a villain, and I dunno about Karai but the 4kids preview text says the TMNT fight the Foot again so who knows. Now Leatherhead is back too?

I remember back in the early years of this show people said that it seemed like the show would never get out of the formula of the Turtles fighting Shredder and the Foot. Sure, we went through like three different Shredders along the way, but for the most part all the villains are still the same.

I actually hoped we wouldn't see anything of Bishop, Baxter or Karai this season, but unfortunately they're all back and still doing the same things.

I guess I just want brand NEW villains. Sure I like the old ones, but they've gotten stale and unless this new season does something special with them it'll feel like a step backwards for this show. Bring in some mutants if they dare like Armaggon, but give the Turtles someone new to fight.

August? Awesome. But September would be more than fine.

I like the new designs pretty well. They're much better than the Fast Forward designs though that's not saying much.

It's a tricky mix. Fast Forward went with completely new villains and most of em were met with mixed reviews on these boards. If you're bringing in new guys, it's best to still have the staples hang around to give the audience a sense of familiarity. Otherwise it doesn't quite feel like Ninja Turtles.

I'm excited about seeing returning villains if only to see how they've been redesigned to fit the new art style. Even that alone freshens them up.

While I think this looks pretty good, I have a question for some TMNT fans: Will I be totally lost if I've only seen three three-parters of the series (Notes from the Underground, The Shredder Strikes Back, Return to New York)? I know the general outlines of the rest of the storyline, but is it necessary to see the entire 2k3 series and Fast Forward (which I really don't want to, considering the general opinion of that series) before watching Back to the Sewers?

I think the designs look pretty nice. I hope the actual animation doesn't look cheap though, I hate the thought that TMNT might end up looking like a flash cartoon.
