TMJ Arthritis/Malocclusion Question

I'm new on this forum and need some answers. Any that are given will be greatly appreciated. I will keep this brief, or try to.

In June 2009 I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at the age of 36 years of age. After the surgery the Dental Hygenist explained upon waking from surgery that the Surgeon had difficulty with the right side removal of the wisdom teeth. I want to start by saying I had zero problems healthwise before I had this surgery. Move forward 3 months after surgery and one side of my face, (the right side), was significantly different from the left. I had pain and went straight back to the oral surgeon who of course said it was nothing that he could have done. Whatever! Anyway: I've seen Neurologist, 4 ER visits due to pain in the ear, behind ear, localized pain in neck, shooting pains in head, all on right side, mind you.

Finally I saw a Chiropractor who took my money before I finally was referred to a TMJ specialist, never would have thought this was the issues because TMJ symptoms mimic so many others. 3 CT Scans and 2 MRI's later with no detection of abnormalities I am currently wearing a Splint and taking inflammatory drugs, pain meds and a compound for pain, which is helping a bit.

My biggest issue at hand is the way my face looks. I was one that really cared about the way I looked. Currently I have arthritis on my right Temporal Mandibular Joint which makes my left side look bigger than my right side. The TMJ specialist I am going to said that I would have to wear the splint for 6 months of treatment and this should help. I am concerned because I don't do the things I once did. I look considerably different to myself, even though people say only slightly. I can see the malocclusion. What should I do at this point? I just started the splint therapy. It reduces pain but I am more worried about my appearance. Please help, is surgery something I should consider or should I wait a little longer? Also does Botox help with the deviation I am speaking of? Thank you to all who have responded in advance.

Katintransit,

There is a great TMJ message board. Just go down towards the bottom of the list of health topics. There are many people there with lots of experience who can give you tons of great advice.

I'm fairly newly diagnosed with TMJ. From what I've read, a lot of the facial disfiguration is caused by the tightness of the muscles that are adjusting for your TMJ displacement. As things are adjusted back in place, the muscles aren't as tight and the muscles should "loosen" up enough for your features to go back towards normal. I'm certainly not any kind of expert in this though. I just read a lot on the internet.

Good Luck,
