Since i read an artcl reg dog foods i hv brought up this guy as a veg. Touch wood he is fine. hope beef agrees with him.

Cooked beef and rice isn't a balanced diet.

If you want to feed your dog a raw or home cooked diet I suggest you put him on a quality commercial food while you research how to do it. Doing a home made diet incorrectly can lead to nutritional deficiencies for your dog, done correctly they are awesome though.

Some high quality commercial foods include Wellness, Solid Gold, Nature's Variety and Innova. There are others those are just off the top of my head. Someone did leave the link for Dog Food Analysis and I'd definately check it out to help you find a food.

okay, i'm not going to judge you or yell at you... but it sounds like you're jumping into something without the necessary information, and dog nutrition is one of my favorite subjects so here's my two cents:

if you are going to cook for your dog don't give it salt. dogs don't need seasonings. and the sodium in salt is terrible for them.

start with chicken, not beef. beef is much harder to digest. and bones are necessary if you aren't giving supplements. i would recommend a raw diet, personally. there are numerous groups here on yahoo that specialize in alternative feeding. Rawfeeding is my favorite group.

pedigree food is just as bad as basic dog chow. both have aided in the early deaths of many dogs.

boiled chicken is a good alternative if you are cooking for your dog, but the problem with cooked meat is that when you cook it you remove most of the nutrients, so you are depriving your dog of a lot. i would do chicken leg-quarters. you get the bone and meat all in one sitting, add some chicken livers to the mix occaisonally.

dogs don't have molars, so why are we giving them veggies and grains? in the wild they don't eat these things. they consume the stomachs of their prey, but not what is inside. dogs will graze, yes, but it is generally for the purpose of vomiting later.

there is a ton of info out there for you, and i think you should branch away from the yahoo answers page and look for some professional advice. we can type until our fingers fall off, but relying on the good will of strangers will only get you so far.

Hi.. i'm sure you will take good care of your dog.

Avoid anything with rawhide in it -- it can get twisted in the dog's intestines.

One of the best "chews" to give your dog is a raw beef marrow bone. these can be purchased at the meat market.

That is not a complete diet. The best thing to do would to just buy a good dry dog food - Eagle Pack Holistic or Merrick are two good choices - and add some of the beef as a topper. If you are going to feed a homemade diet,it needs to be nutritionally complete. You need to add some fish, eggs, carrots, cottage cheese and chicken ( use the livers and leave on some skin) and use brown rice, barley and/or lentils. You also need to give the dog a multivitamin/mineral supplement),salmon oil and a calcium supplement ( two tums per day will do,along with the cottage cheese and multivitamin/mineral supplement).

As for the salt, dogs do need iodine,so a pinch of iodized salt is fine.If you add canned salmon, mackerel or sardines to the diet, this will supply both salt and iodine.

I have read both of your questions and I agree that your GSD eating meat is the right thing to do DEFINITELY! Though - cooked meat, salt and rice isnt an adequate diet for a dog either. I understand that you are vegetarian and may not know a lot about it, but please do some more research. Raw meat is the way to go for dogs. No salt! No dairy! ALL dogs are descendants from wolves - especially those which are more closely related - GSD's being one of them. Have you ever seen a pack of wolves sitting around a campfire roasting their kill and saying "Hmm, still needs something... Will you pass the salt?" Nope, cos they will tear the meat raw off of the carcass. It's just the way it is. Your dog will do FINE eating meat because he is a carnivore! Feel free to feel him veggies also as this is great for their health and also something which wild dogs eat. Carrots are a great treat and snack for him. He should also be eating raw, meaty bones - NO COOKED BONES! I hope I was able to enlighten and help you.
