The story is this: A groups of students in a survival class get shipped through a teleport door to a planet for their final exam. The main character is a male whose family doesn't understand why he wants to take the course in the first place. The survival instructor warns him of a specific animal on the planet. A nova knocks out the transport mechanism and they are stuck. They are left there for two or more years and manage to create a thriving little town, after figuring out how to deal with the critter they had been warned about. Eventually they are found by civilization again and are pulled off the planet. The main character spends some awkward time with his family because he was happy on the planet and the rescue newscast painted the survivors all in a primitive light (literally as the rescue crew showed up in the middle of a hunt, the students were using spears and knives, the rescue crew actually painted some of the student's faces with a quick sneaky device before taking snapshots). In the end, the main character leads a group to colonize the planet officially. I thought the title had been something like "Window in the Sky" or "Door in the Sky" but I can't find it.
