tips on bicycle lamps?

Night cyclists, other than reflectors, what sort of light do you use? I wanted to get one of these hand-cranked battery-free lamps I saw at a store--I don't know what powers it, but when I went back to the store, they were out. I settled for a battery-powered lamp, with great regret. If you use a battery-powered light, what do you do about the prospect of the batteries dying? Do you feel it necessary to carry spare batteries? (See why I wanted a battery-free lamp?)

Both of my lights are battery operated. One uses AAA and the other uses AA. I use rechargeable batteries to help cut down on waste.

With my rear light, the brightness fades so I can tell over time when I need to recharge the batteries. With my front, it will shut itself off but I can turn it on for short periods of time until I get home.

For around town, I don't carry extra batteries. For long trips I do.

I need to buy a light kit too and I have narrowed it down to 3 companys. Blackburn, Light & Motion and Topeak. I am going through wooded area/trails and dark streets so I need all the light I can get. I plan on spending $2-300 on the lights. If thats too much for you, try a LED light, they are bright, last very long and dont use alot of battery power which is good fot the environment.
