Tips for painting fondant...?

I'm making an ocean theme birthday cake for my niece's birthday. I'm using homemade marshmallow fondant, and I would like to experiment with hand painting it to give it a more realistic water feel. Any tips for painting it? I know how to knead in the color, but I really wanted to try to paint it so it would appear less homogeneous and have more of a sun through the water effect. Any responses will be appreciated!
I would love to learn air brushing, but unfortunately I don't own the equipment. I eventually hope to buy one!

Mix a small amount of paste food colouring with vodka and paint with a small paintbrush. The alcohol evaporates quickly so the fondant doesn't get overly wet or soggy

Instead of painting it mix in some blue paste coloring and knead it in. But don't knead it in all the way. That will give it a marbleized water look.

Mix some gel color with vodka or a clear extract (vanilla, almond, etc...) and then paint it on with a paintbrush. It will need to dry for a few hours before it's not sticky to the touch. I've painted marshmallow fondant to look like water before and if you go over it a second time, it will pull up some of the paint and create lighter and darker spots, kind of like sunlight hitting the ocean. I used Wilton's sky blue. I love the look of white fondant painted with different colors, it almost seems to glow from within.

I want to buy an airbrush one day too :D but for now a good ol' paintbrush, vodka and gel color work fine for me.
