Tips for getting into photography?

I am looking into doing a little at home photography! Frankly i am just sick of paying someone hundreds of dollars to take pictures of my child do a little editing and then send them off to get printed so I am going to give it a shot. (I am in no way saying that these people are not talented I just would love to try it) I need to know what are some suggestions as far as getting started ex camera, software, seamless backdrops, lighting etc. Thanks for all help and suggestions in advance.
 
Honestly? Take a class before you spend so much money on stuff you may not even know how to use.
Your local community college or community center may offer the classes, and they are a lot of fun, and you learn a lot.

As for cameras? A digital SLR and photoshop.
