Tips for beginning oboe player?

I am starting to give lessons to a sixth grade oboe player and am looking for suggestions. I've played the oboe for about 5 years but only took formal lessons for a short time. I've heard that she is good rhythmically but beyond that I am unsure of her ability. Thanks for any ideas.
 
Teach her the scales. i'm a musician and my teacher is always on my back about scales. but work on books with her. sightreading. but mostly SCALES!!!!!!
