Tipping in japanese restaurants.?

I went to eat a this japanse place with my gf friends, i paid for the bill and her friends said they would cover the tip, so i said okay cool. turns out they left a 2 dollar tip on a 60 dollar bill. haha so the waiter has the balls to run out and ask for more.
So i grab the dollars he was shaking and tell him "oh yea, I forgot they do not tip in japan huh?"

So my question is why do we even tip in japanse restaurants when they do not even do it in their own country.

We tip in America because wait staff are typically paid extremely low wages. In some places, the minimum wage for servers in barely over $2 an hour, and part of that goes automatically to taxes. In some other countries, servers are paid more competitive wages. When you walk into a restaurant in a non-tipping country, the wait person's wage is already fully figured into the cost of the food you buy. Here, you pay a lower (relative) price for your food, but you are then expected to pay more of the server's wage directly.

Well, they are a Japanese restaurant in the US. (well, I'll just assume your in the US :p ) Anyways, most people that work in restaurants practically live off their tips. If they provided you with good service then you should tip them accordingly. Not only is a respect thing but really, tips are like 60% of these people's pay. If I was you I probably wouldn't ever go back to that restaurant again. You might end up with some very unpleasant ingredients in your next meal.

Thumbs up to "L" and "Seeker" you two were spot on in your answers but damn my slow typing skills!

I think the practice of tipping is so confusing. Those we tip are getting paid to do their jobs, why do we need to supplement their earnings further? I believe in Japan they don't tip. It's a personal choice to tip in a Japanese restaurant and usually it's ten percent. It's entirely up to you. I personally don't usually tip anyone except my hair stylist. In cafes and restaurants it's sometimes included in the bill which I don't agree with as these people are getting paid to do their job. It's up to you but I wouldn't bother leaving them money, after all you worked hard for that money. Hope this helped.

cos people wuna make some money these days and they dont have time for cowards like international restaurants so they just make the dishes
