Tingling, pain in thighs

Each time I walk I get a burning, tingling sensation in my thighs after I have gone about 3 miles. It continues as long as I continue walking and is quite painful. But if I stop and sit down for a short time the sensation goes away and usually doesn't return until I have walked several more miles. It began after a painful bout with shingles.

I am 76 years old and in excellent health. I usually walk about six miles three times a week. Sometimes I walk further.

It isn't a severe problem but my curiosity is aroused. Anyone have a similar problem and maybe a diagnosis?

Thanks.

Also, do you have diabetes, or even borderline diabetes. If you do, it could be diabetic neuropathy or it could also be PAD (peripheral atery disease). These can be checked out my your doc. Good luck! I've had a leg with tingles and crawling sensations now over the past couple of days and I saw the Dr. last night and she said it was nothing after doing in-office tests.

I just wanted to add to check for claudication on the leg. It has somehat of the same symptoms but since your in such good shape and walk so much, I doubt that's it. Also, fibromyalgia can cause some of this pain as well. There are so many things that can cause this, that a doctor's visit may help. I think you'll be fine though, keep on walking, that is great stuff for you.

Thank you both for responding. As I mentioned previously, this condition is more of a nuisance than a problem (unless it becomes worse) but it seems weird since it is so predictable and disappears after sitting only a few moments.

My best guess is that it is postherpetic neuralgia but I was hoping to get more information to still my curiosity.
