timing on how to cook a steak?

If the instructions say '"cook steak 7 minutes each side for medium"'.... that means 7 then flip then another 7. or 3.5, flip, then another 3.5??

(im not very good at cooking, obviously!! haha)
 
The instructions given mean 7 minutes on the first side, then turn and cook an additional 7 minutes.

From my experience though, if you cook a one inch steak for a total of 15 minutes, it is going to be well, well done, not even close to medium.
