i have an ltd that pops back trhu the carbs. ive been thru the carbs twice jets are clear and correct its sluggish when you open the throttle until the rpm builds. it idles great. any suggestions?
It acts lean when the throttle opens

Lean running is going to cause backfiring in the carbs. Look for the idle jet screw on the side of the carbs and try adjusting it. I'm not sure if the screws control air or fuel on your bike, Kawasaki bikes in that era had both. Try screwing each one in say 1/4 or 1/2 turn and see how it acts. If it runs worse, back each out out1/4 or 1/2 turn from the orginal position. The screws may be under a plastic or aluminum plug or cap. You'll have to pry that off to gain access.

If the valve timing was off, the idle would probably be pretty ragged.
