Keep in mind that Up and Ponyo haven't been released in England yet, explaining why they're not there yet Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is.

Strange list; it doesn't seem like they even think half of the films are that great, but it gets points for variety, at least. Pleasantly surprised with their number one pick; not mine, but it's better than every list having Snow White at number one just because of historical importance.

The fact the Robin Hood is in the top 10 scares me (no offense to anyone that likes that movie). Also am I the only one who is shocked by the lack of Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

So given the disagreement between TimeOut and Gilliam on Bakshi's Lord of the Rings, this really isn't a "TimeOut and Terry Gilliam's Top 50 Animated Films List" is it? More like "TimeOut's Arbitrary List of 50 Animated Films Interspersed With Comments By Terry Gilliam In Order To Make Us Seem More Important."

Some odd choices but a lot of variety. And always refreshing to be introduced to something new - never heard of A Soldier's Tale before.

Well, this name of the article is "Time Out's 50 greatest animated films, with added commentary by Terry Gilliam". Seems accurate enough to me.

Some of the posts in the article's comments section are mildly depressing:

Er... Akira is on the list.

Yes it is.

THANK GOD

Right at the start of the flippin' article. Do people actually read the thing before complaining?

WOW! Totoro got number one. I'm very happy about that. :D Good list, lots of films I've never seen before.

I do wish that Kiki's Delivery Service was there, however.

I am really happy that NIMH and two of bakshi's films are on the list. They never get anywhere in animation lists, but seriously quit putting in the Disney's flicks...Make room for movies that deserve to be on there, I am surprised that Waltz With bashir isnt on the list.

A very different list showing off a lot of titles we usually don't get to see on these lists. I do love that "The Brave Little Toaster" and "The Secret of NiMH" got some recognition for a change. It's also nice to see some non-Ghibli anime movies make it on the list like "Perfect Blue", and the oft-forgotten "Whispers of the Heart" being added in from the Ghibli stable.

I'm actually happier with this list as it highlights the quirky and experimental as well as those who are simply great.

I really like this list because they having a variety of films from different studio, not just from Ghibli or Disney/Pixar and it's still a honor to see peoples taking this industry seriously. Unlike EW who made a terrible top 20 animated features when they choose only the only recognised ones. That's reminds me the hit list songs our local radios played when they have a weekend celebration. It's kinda rushing.

It's fun to see The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, Fritz the Cat, Beavis & Butt-Head Do America, Yellow Submarine, Heavy Metal, Aladdin and many more in this list. It's proven how they taken their job seriously. But that's lack of Daffy Duck's Quackbusters (Great film BTW. Buy it this week) and a classic childhood one: The well-animated Dumbo.

I have to say, while the shorts in Quackbusters are awesome, and the new footage is funny, somehow I don't think it really jived well as a movie. The ending just comes completely out of nowhere, and the "ghost-busting" theme isn't carried all that well by the shorts.

But I'm really glad to see Transformers the Movie on the list. Yeah, there are some pretty big spots of poor animation, but when it gets good, those sequences put some of the best animated movies to shame. The amount of detail in Unicron's transformation is just mind blowing.

And yeah, it's also kinda nice to see a nod to Robin Hood. Too me, it's really a case of it being better than the sum of its parts, even if its not a particularly "good" movie. It just has a certain charm to it.
