Time Machine (1960) CH4 now

Why this was remade and Americanised (yes, yes, the first one was made in America) I don't know but there you are. Wonderful film from George Pal. Eminantly watchable.
 
Thank you Channel 4 for giving me a chance to see this delightful movie again. I haven't sat down and watched it in years. I still need to get a hold of the HD version.

Also if anyone is interested the mini-sequel is on Youtube somewhere. It features George tracking down Filby after 30 years. It's about 10 minutes long but is a nice little extra for fans
 
I have this on DVD don't think an HD version existed.
The DVD looks very good for now.

Now which books or stuff would you take to the future in your Time Machine?

I don't think an Ipod would be good unless you can run this on Solar power or wind up then it will be of use.
 
The 'mini-sequel is on the DVD, tagged on to the 'making of' as hosted by Rod himself, it's a little over sentimental, despite me being very sentimental about the film too. This is one film that would be great remastered and released on Bluray, I'd be first in line to buy it.

The score by Russell Garcia is great, especially the Film Score Monthly release, with all the electronic effects and out-takes, in fact I'm gonna listen to it now. My son and I watched the film on DVD about a month ago, he loved it.
 
The mini sequel was made in the mid 90's and appeared on a US VHS release all by itself so I was really glad when it was an extra on the dvd which was one of the earliest dvd releases so a Bluray is long over due .

It's the 50th Anniversary this year so I'm hoping that even though Warner have announced some Sc-Fi Blurays for later this year already that they do manage to fit this classic in.

It seems more logical that a 54th Anniversary edition of Forbidden Planet
 
Totally agree that the new version was not as good.
They could have left it open for a sequel, but they didn't.

According to the DVD I have of the 1960 version, there was originally planned to be a sequel but it never happened for whatever reason.

I know you will all probably want to stamp on me, but maybe they could 1 day remake the Time Machine again, with the option of a sequel. Time Travel films always seem to be popular.
 
I think a remake, or just a new film version as it is of course a classic science fiction novel, would be welcome, if of course it is done well. As always, wishful thinking. The recent version with Guy Pierce is an out and out travesty, and it seems more of a kick in the nuts as it was H G Wells' very own GranRABon who directed it!
As far as sequels, the film makers need look no further than Stephen Baxter's official sequel to the novel, The Time Ships. An awesome book, that, along with The Time Machine are my two favourite books, ever! In fact, both are overdue a re-read very soon, I get totally lost in them both.
 
The first half of the film is iconic .
Those early scenes of travelling through time and meeting his friend's son twice in the future are pure magic.

But once it settles down to the main story it loses its magic a bit.

Still can't wait for the Bluray

What a tragic waste of a great film to be shown during the afternoon.

Ho-hum Films only become "Classics" when a re-make is made

The Time Machine originally, and up to a few years ago, was a throwaway, drive-in pot-boiler with crap effects and a wooden leading man.

Now, since a poor remake was released, it's suddenly a Sci-Fi must see.
 
Perhaps to you, definitely not to me, I've always considered the original a classic, since I saw it first in the 70's. Never has it been considered a drive-in bot boiler (wtf) and the effect have always been considered at the pinnacle for there day, and as for Rod Taylor as the time traveller, a worthy and earnest performance.
I barely took notice of the remake, new it was gonna be shite, and that was confirmed when I finally got 'round to seeing it.

Same here, I had a lot of affection for the original long before the remake came along.

Come to think of it, the Time Machine remake is probably the remake I least compared with the original when I watched it. The backstory is completely different, the hologram character has a big part in it, the whole subplot with the moon being destroyed etc. makes it different enough from the original that it's more like a whole new story.
