It's been 7 months since my microdiscectomy at the L4/L5 level. My hamstrings just won't get back to the flexibility they had before the surgery. I've always been extremely flexible (except going backwarRAB), even with the herniated disc and painful nerve impingement and always had and have a pretty extensive stretching routine. All other muscles have been back to normal since about 3-4 months after surgery except those darn hamstrings don't want to come back.

Is this typical? Is there a permanent change?

one thing you may want to ask your surgeon is how and what was actually impacted in your spine, both pre op and post op. in some cases, if there was some level of actual motor nerve hit or loss, damage, it can show up in the form of a level of what feels like spasticity in particular areas. thus the tight hamstrings? is this in both legs or just one? did you have a "centrally" located type of herniation or more to one side? what was the extent of the herniation and what were you experiencing as far as symptoms pre op? Marcia

The herniation was on the right side and it's my left hamstrings that are tighter. I can't remeraber the name of it, but I know that if you have pain on the right, if your left leg is lifted while lying down, it will hurt more than the right. So that doesn't surprise me.

The herniation was moderate. My doc doesn't like to use concrete terms. I had pain from the right side of my lower back all the way down to my right foot.
