The following link shows the muncipal code for Torrance. http://municipalcodes.lexisnexis.com/codes/torrance/

If you read the traffic section there are several code sections that relate to parking, parking enforcement and the like. It appears as though the city traffic engineer is permitted designate certain areas as no parking. However, there appear to be some stringent requirements for signage that may or may not apply in your case.

I don't know. I am not from Torrance. That said, the answer lies within the Code. You may want to check the ticket to see if it references a code section and then double check to make sure that you weren't within as exception. Often times cops will refer to the wrong Code section on the ticket, providing you with a defense based on a technicality.

Good luck.

*sigh*

Your hyperbole is funny, but really. You have a 1098. I am sure you have been to a mall. I am sure you have seen the grey hairs back up into or nearly into a Suburban. How likely do you think it is your bike has a strong chance of being hit in a lot? It's a pretty good one. The OP was not being an ass or doing anything to harm anyone, he was just trying to protect his investment. Do you honestly think it harms anyone for a bike to park on the sidewalk? As long as it isn't blocking the whole damn thing how can it be an issue????

sounds like some cops that like to uphold the rules. At the malls in norcal I have taken my bike a few times and always parked in the ladder or a area by the door. None are designated parking, but cops don't seem to care. I guess it depends on the city or the cop.

Check the code that the member posted for you and see if you can fight it. The only thing worse than getting a ticket from a motorcycle cop is getting a parking ticket from "Paul Blart, Mall Cop."

I promise, some of those uptight, badge toting, Village People mustache having bastards just need to get laid.

I get your point. And honestly, I wasn't trying to make anyone mad. I agree that the OP wasn't being an ass, nor was he harming anyone. But just because I ride a Ducati doesn't mean I can park it where I want because it was expensive. If everyone who rode a bike to the mall parked on the sidewalk, the sidewalk would be clogged with bikes. Besides, I'd be more worried about my bike on the sidewalk than I would in the parking lot.

I guess I always thought it was okay to park on the sidewalk where bicycles are as long as it wasn't obstructing a path. I always saw bikers do the same and I've always done it so do the rest of you park in actual parking spaces???

Cops are everywhere around the 3rd St. Promenade in SM. You can park in the mall for free, but you can't park in the ladder area or you'll get a ticket. So, I'd always look for a spot on the first floor in the free mall garage. Conversely, they let you park IN the ladder area on the first floor in the pay garages. It's a pain in the ass, but it never hurts to ask. Find Paul Blart Mall Cop and take a minute to ask next time if you can. That's how I got my info and it only took a second. You can avoid tix from a hard on like the guy you encountred.

Moreover, I don't hate cops. For the most part, I respect the job they do. However, Cycle Cops who do nothing except write tix or parking cops who do nothing except the same...I have no care for them whatsoever. I have never actually seen them HELP anyone.
