hi i just recently purchased a 1978 cj7 and there two thumping noises that worry me now im mechanicly inclined i do most of my own work but i just cant figure it out

the first thumping noise is when i turn the wheel it sounds off twice then stops but the wheel turns fine by the way i have power steering

the second thump is when i hit a bump at speed it makes a thuping noise my buddie thinks ti might be the transfer case rattling but theres no marks or anything where it would rub metal.

then i dont know if this has antthing to do with this but when i hit somthing like a joint in a bridge or if im going down hill and hit the brakes the jeep pulls one way or another almost like it is being steered but its not it will scare the heck out of you

help please thanks

I'm going to throw a few suggestions in here. See if the steering box is loose. Take a look at the coil springs see if they are broke. Check the ball joints. If you have a grease gun shoot some grease in to the ball joint nipples this will lube the BJs and if they are bad the noise will be less. If the Jeep pulls to one side or the other the alignment is out of adjustment. You might have loose front end steering parts also.

Check front drive shafts along with the steering. Any thing loose could do this.
Next check all shocks and shock mounts. Then check your motor and tranny mounts.
Then the main drive shaft "U" joints
