Throat Problem

My dad has a bad snoring problem that causes him to sometimes wake up while he's sleeping, caused by a loose skin flap in his throat. Sometimes when he also tries to blow his nose nothing comes out, because the flap doesn't hold and just goes flailing.
I'm not sure what the flap is called...the epiglottis, maybe?

Anyway, he has to have surgery to get it removed.
I'm just wondering...what are the consequences to having the epiglottis(?)/skin flap removed?
I believe I'm starting to fit into the same situation he's in from forcing lugi's up too many times or moving my throat like I'm talking with it when I'm thinking. I don't think my condition is as bad as his, but I can always feel the flap like it's out of place or like I've got a little pebble stuck in my throat, or like I have a sore throat (sort of). Not only that, but when I tried to blow all the snot out of my nose while I was in the shower, no snot came out and I felt the flap...flapping rapidly. Though that's the first time it's happened. Probably because I normally put more concentration into keeping my throat in order while I try to blow snot out.

Have you been checked for allergies? It sounds like you have them, trying to blow out snot and drianage in your throat. I would get checked out by an ENT and see what they have to say.

The surgery your dad is having is painful, and slow healing. My husband had checked into it, but he didn't need it. His ENT says that she doesn't do it unless it's the last resort.

Has your father been checked for sleep apnea? It sounds like that is what he has. A c-pap machine would help with the snoring. My hubby has been on one and it makes all the difference for him.

good luck!

The previous poster is correct about the surgery being done if all else fails. Having sleep apnea is really not somthing that you want to mess with and my first question is: by having this surgery, is this going to fix your fathers problem or is sleep apnea his problem and by having this surgery, will he be cured of sleep apnea or will he still have the condition?
I think that your father needs to speak with the surgeon doing the procedure and he may want to postpone and have a sleep study done to see if sleep apnea is a problem.
The c-pap machines are covered by insurance, at least here in Massachusetts the machines are 100 percent covered.
If you think you may be developing or have developed the same problem, than why do you not request an appointment with the doctor that your father is currently seeing?
I hope this helps answer some of your question.

Allergies can cause the drainage that your father and you keep coughing up. Allergies produce the fleme that you have. It runs down the back of your throat causing you to clear your throat all day..

With sleep apnea, there is the possibility that if your body doesn't keep breathing you can die. My hubby during his test, stopped breathing any where from 16 second to 68 seconds at a time. Which is considered rather SERIOUS!
