Thriller versus Purple Rain

Thriller had a perfect Pop/Soul sound and sold bucket loaRAB but I don't own it and never want to whereas I only played Purple Rain a few days back..

Thriller is a more complete pop album but that does'nt mean I rate it a whole lot. 'When Doves Cry' and the title track 'Purple Rain' are much more preferable to anything off Thriller.

Hmm? But that's exactly how Purple Rain differs from Thriller and tops it: while Thriller is really only about the singles and title track with the rest being unremarkable filler, Purple Rain is all about the album tracks. The trio of The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue and Darling Nikki (and particularly Darling Nikki) is nothing short of remarkable. Add to that the spectacular pop of the 5 singles, and you have a near perfect album. The only unnecessary track on the record is probably Baby I'm A Star, and it's still great all the same.

Then there's the point that Prince wrote and produced nearly the entire thing, whereas Jackson wrote less than half of the songs on Thriller. True, that says nothing about the music itself, but it says plenty about which individual is the bigger talent/artist.

In the end it's all a question of preference, but for those who "get" Purple Rain so to speak, I can't see any way that they could possibly prefer Thriller.

Sign 'O' The Times stanRAB as a fantastic album without a single bad cut on it, and I can't see that anything aside from pure, sheer arrogance could lead one to call it rubbish.

Is hating Prince not a good enough reason?

Quality of music outweighs technical abillity, you of all people should know that, you don't go from trashing talented artists on a regular basis then go on about how Prince is better because he writes all the songs and plays instruments.

Nickelback write all their songs too, and they play their own instruments. More talented than The Temptations maybe?

I hate Prince's voice, I hate his guitar playing and I hate his songwriting, save a few good songs. I don't consider him to be this tremendous talent that everyone says he is.

Urban, your criteria for talent obviously dosen't go anywhere beyond "I enjoy his music, therefore he's talented". I hate it when you try to be objective and naturally fail at it.

I didn't say Prince was talentless, rather, he's not anywhere as talented as people say he is in my opinion.

That's not to say Jackson's talent isn't also overestimated, but at least his music is good to me, thar matters a lot more.

This argument should be about who's music you prefer, I don't know how it became a talent argument, those arguments are always stupid and pointless.

Dream Theater are more talented than The Ramones.

It was a throwaway comment , you reading far too much into it.

Actually it's only the past few years I've got into Prince's music properly. Before that I used to say I could see he had talent but his music wasn't for me which kinda proves your first quote wrong.

Hilarious use of "It's all about personal preference" and then "I can't see how people could disagree with my preference" in the same sentence.

I think Purple Rain is a fabulous album, and I still prefer Thriller. It doesn't take "failing to get" Purple Rain to prefer Thriller.

Thriller

Its a pop masterpiece it may never be replicated even prince cant hold a candle to it. its really unfortunate about the bad stuff thats happened to michael but nothing can tear down the perfection of that album
