three mobile broadband keeps disconnecting?

just bought a new laptop about 2 week ago, its a Sony Vaio and on the three mobile broadband package, 15 gb one. i have found that it works best in my bedroom with the dongle connected to a usb extension lead hanging over my curtain rail (higher up obvs). its been fine but it keeps disconnecting at random times and i have to unplug it, close down the 3 program and then plug back in and it works fine until it disconnects. just wondering is there any way for this to stop doing this?
