Three BBC weather forecasters axed

No you're wrong,

The detail may have improved, but the accuracy of the detail, is no more correct than a general forecast.
I've lost count of the number of times I've got wet playing golf this year in the mornings, when it says there won't be any rain until after lunch or none at all. Far better to say; "possibility of showers."

You have to actually experience the weather to make a valid observation.
We had hailstones "as big as mint imperials" last Wednesday, they weren't forecasted at all!

SounRAB like a very localised extreme case. I'm afraid a national forecast won't be able to provide quite that level of detail, but it will give you a very good overview.

Doghouse, the accuracy and detail of forecasts have improved no end over the decades. The facts can't be disputed.

Are weather forecasts perfect for everyone all of the time? No. Is there room for further improvement? Definately. But thats not an arguement for cutting back on professional forecasts and forecasters, if anything thats an arguement for going even further in advancing and investing in the science.

All of this is off topic though, of course.

Yes.

Why do you keep adding an exclamation mark to the end of this programme name? AFAIK it's just "The Weather Show." And I don't see what your particular gripe is with it. I watched an edition last Christmas and it was very informative, giving lots of information on how the forecasts are prepared, what models are used, etc, and also answered lots of viewers questions. Perhaps you should watch it and you'll find out there's a lot more to weather than just "will one need an umbrella today?" If that's all you need perhaps online is the way to go for you, but just because you feel that way does not mean there isn't demand for detailed forecasts on the TV delivered by a weather professional. I can assure you there is. How the BBC would have coped last winter without one, I dread to think!

Yes, until tv forecasting evolved and viewers discovered a better way of it being done. I can't imagine there are many like you that would like to see a return to those days when the weather was more of an afterthought. Especially nowadays when the weather is increasingly making headlines. The professional insight provided by dedicated forecasters is extremely valuable to me and many viewers, and one of the reasons why I value the BBC so highly. Take it away and suddenly the BBC is on a par with or even behind the commercial sector in that respect.

False. Weather forecasting is unquestionably more accurate now than it was then. The models that shape the forecast we see on TV have advanced massively in that time. You can dispute that all you want, but I'm afraid it is fact.

Yes, and then you'll complain no doubt about the programmes that money is spent on. They can't win! News and weather as far as I'm concerned is the most important service the BBC provides and the last area that should be cut. If all you want is a generic and not up-to-date graphical forecast for your area, then it is true that there are other more basic options out there that might suit your neeRAB better, but please don't bemoan a service that is there to inform, is increasingly sidelined by the commercial sector and many people deeply appreciate.

I agree, just told my OH McElwee was getting the axe and he said 'Who?' and I said 'The one who chunters on and on!' and he knew who I meant :D

I like McElwee, and he is certainly the last throw back to the glory days as said earlier, but he does chatter on and on and I find myself shouting at the TV sometimes to just hurry up and tell me what the weather is going to be doing!

The Met office can spend what they like (as far as I'm concerned as a licence payer), it's a Government funded department by the Ministry of Defence, with some funRAB from the Civil Aviation Authority and and the EU. It doesn't come out of the licence fee.

"The Weather Show!" is the responsibility of and paid for, by the BBC.
As I said, no need for all these weather girls/men, the newsreaders can read the forecast provided by the Met office and the money saved used for programmes.
Stop confusing what the BBC spend with the Goverment's spending.

Thing is, its horses for courses. What some would call "chattering on" I'd call going a little more in depth into the science of WHY the weather is doing what its doing.

Some people just want the facts and then get one with the news and some people (like me) want to go a little more in depth and examine the science of weather. Both styles are fine, IMO and there should be room for both.

Thing is though, Rob and possibly John Hammond, are the only forecasters that are actually prepared to do the science bit. And given this "in depth" style of forecasting was actually the norm back in the glory days of BBC forecasting, with the likes of Bill Giles and Michael Fish, I think its a tremendously sad and depressing decision.

Are you THE Bruno Brookes?

Agree with your comment. Rob McElwee gives all sorts of extra info that explains how the weather works. A shame he's going.

Phil Avery has a nice fatherliness about him. Tomasz Shavemeknackers is just sexy. Still, they've left the equally sexy Chris Fawkes, so that's okay.

Michael Fish! Good Lord! How pleasing to know the great man is still knocking about! It's surprising who crops up on regional TV/radio these days, shunted off the national agenda.

That might be because he has a certain amount of time to fill and using it to tell us what the weather will be would only take up some of it.
Someone told me once that the BBC's weather forecasts are just about the only piece of live, unscripted programming they put out. If that's still so, and they are only told shortly before the broadcast how much time they have to fill, then there aren't too many options - talk slower (even more annoying), add some foreign weather interest (big yawns) or go into greater depth in a topic they know about (at least some may find it intersting): hence "the science bit".

Louise Lear has an incredibly irritating way of speaking. She makes worRAB last three or four times as long as they should by emphasising them for no reason. She sounRAB like a tetchy primary school teacher who hates her class.

Seems common theme now to get rid of male broadcasters leaving dolly birRAB fronting shows.
Sexism is fine as long as it is men who are the victims.
