thought provoking films

apart from the obvious ones like the Matrix, what films have you found make you sit there in silence thinking about what you have just seen.

the main ones for me would be Donnie Darko, Butterfly Effect and Godfather (don't know why it just does).

Are we talking about the same Butterfly Effect here?! :D ;)

Mulholland Drive is a bit of a head scratcher on the first run through, although most David Lynch movies tend to be :)

I thought Fight Club was amazing when I first watched it, matrix as well left me stunned (hated the sequels though), most hyped up films dissapoint me.
I watched sixth sense and didn't know it had a twist (watched on pirate before anyone knew about it :o ) and that left me gobsmacked.
Dead poets society left me feeling emotional for a while after I'd left the cinema, wonderful film, Robin Williams finest moment. :)

The LOTR trilogy made me think. Made me think I've wasted probably half a day on them.

In terms of head scratching, Memento, Pulp Fiction, Vanilla Sky & Donnie Darko all made me think.

In terms of 'thinking about life', Dead Poets Society and The Breakfast Club.

'Requiem for a Dream' and '21 Gramms'

Both great films and very thought provoking.

'City of God' - I sat there thinking "F*ck me that was a true storey!"

Urgh, bla to the horrible Wickerpark! just watch the wonderful original French film.

And Butterfly Effect wasn't exactly thought provoking imo, nothing special about the movie at all to me.

Memento is an excellent one that someone mentioned, Pi is also worth a look. Eraserhead is a good one too.

Not beingg awkward, but what's thought provoking about the Matrix?? Unless your that robbins bloke from GD, who kept the conspiracy thread going. :)

And although I do think it was a good film, I don't think the Butterfly Effect is especially thought provoking.

Requiem for a Dream is the one that instantly springs to mind. City of God's a good call too Craig. :)

Lost Highway - David Lynch film - 'nough said

Mulholland Drive - another Lynch film (IMO not as good as LH)

Memento - Just because you mentally go back and piece it all together

Requiem for a Dream wasn't so much thought provoking, as totally and uttterly mind numbing. I think I sat for about 20 minutes after the film had finished just feeling, well, numb. I once heard it said that this film should be part of the syllabus for 14 year olRAB, if ANYTHING in the world will put them off drugs, this is it.

There was something horribly moral, and not in a good way, at the heart of that film. Everyone who gets into any drug in that movie meets with a terrible fate. It had great style but I don't think it had anything real to say at all (great propaganda for the Republican party perhaps). Liked Pi though, the directors previous film.

I'm looking forward to A Scanner Darkly. The novel is very thought provoking, whether the film will be is another matter.

12 Monkeys
Memento (too much thinking)
Donnie Darko (obviously)
Pulp Fiction
Blair Witch Project (be honest you thought it was true at some point)
