Those of you who have/had the 5500...

So my wife wants a new phone that she will be able to put alarms during the day everyday (reoccuring). I first thought just about any phone would be able to do it. She doesn't want to put a event in the calendar everyday for the same time day after day. So I was thinking maybe a "smartphone" os would be able to do it with a program. I haven't started looking for the programs but she stumbled on the Nokia 550 and liked the way it looked and I noticed that it runs S60 and is fairly small....

First off what are everyone's impressions on it. I have read reviews from various websites and it looks like a pretty decent phone.

Second, anyone know of such a program that you could put in more than one time on the phone for it to go off without having to put a event in the calendar and adding a alarm?

Thanks for all the info.

Well, there's Handy Alarm, Handy Clock, and Alarm Manager, just to name a few.

Out of the three, I believe Alarm Manager has the smallest footprint, and is very easy to use.

Take your pick.

EDIT: I should mention that almost all of the older alarm programs had a habit of disabling the multimedia key as soon as the alarm goes off. The only way to restore functionality of the key was to restart the phone. This bug does not occur in Handy Clock 4.05.

While I have not personally owned or operated a Nokia 5500 (yet ) I do have a few things to say which I think you should know.

The Nokia 5500, along with a few other phones including N73, 3250, N80, etc... run on Symbian S60v3. This is a new version of the OS and there is alot, but not as many applications out for it yet since it is still "new" and software developers are still programming versions of their software to run on s60v3.

Also, something to consider, S60v3 Feature Pack 2 was announced recently. Which means that pretty soon the 5500 along with all the others wont be the latest and greatest either.

I would suggest taking a look at some of the older Symbian S60 OS8.1 phones like the N70 for instance. The reason being is they would be cheaper, and more open to software solutions.

However, If it were my decision, I would go with the Nokia 5500 because its so small and very sleek... And it comes bundled with all of the sporty extras, but I'm sure you read that in the reviews.... I'm sorry for all of this I'm not trying to confuse, I just wanted to educate you a little bit since you seem to not know alot about Symbian

Good Luck, and let us know what happens.... And hopefully someone with a 5500 will chime in to give his "hands on" opinion.

Thanks for the info Knowledge, I have dabled in symbian os (N-Gage QD, and N70) and know alittle about it. I was looking into something smaller for her. She just wants to have the mutiple alarms but the basic phones won't do that they usually only let you put one alarm at a time and not multiple ones unless you put it in the calendar. Which she doesn't want to do just for a reoccurance alarm every certain days. She might not use as many of the applications except those so the newer version would be fine for her.

i have the 5500 along with the n80. The only problem with the add-on alarm applications is that they wont activate unless the phone is switched on. So as the phone has to be switched on all the time, i thought what-the-heck i may as well stick with the calendar then. Its a good phone, very stiff keyboard, no fast texting for me, and the font used is VERY little, but i can see it. But if you have sight problems, it may be too small for some.

i got it, i love it, try and get one that is new stock as the older black ones have keypad problems

theres plenty of software for the phone. ive used all 3 alarm managers before and you can set them to turn on everyday
