My dr as told me that they have to go thru the side of my chest to preform the surgery, and the herniation in pressing on the spinal cord itself, not the nerves.

Has any one been thru this, he told me i would be in the hospital for about a week, and 6 to 8 weeks to recover. I recover quickly for surgerys, i have had 5 in the past 2 years and it doesnt seem to bother me. 3 on my knee one on my elbow and one on my foot

this is going to be major thought so what should i expect

Thanks

Rich

Remmers you may have better luck with this on the spinal board. Thoracic surgery is not dont near as often as cervical & lurabar, but there may be a couple people on the spinal who may be able to answer your questions.
I noticed you dont live to far from me. I have heard its hard to find a surgeon who specializes in the thoracic area, as the doctors orginally thought I had a problem with that area.

I was just curious as to what hospital you will be having your surgery in. Of course if you dont want to answer thats fine. I wish you luck & hopefully someone can help you out with your question. I know of one person who did have thoracic surgery on the boarRAB & I'll mention you to her. Good luck Sammy

Hey there,

I have thoracic problems and have had thoracic surgery. Is there any chance at all that they can do it posteriorly? It does take a particularly good surgeon but it also makes for a much easier recovery. I had a posterior approach and it was not too bad (well, it was pretty horrid compared my cervical fusion).

Unfortunately a posterior approach is not always an option and they need to do a thoracotomy. To say that the recovery will be 6 to 8 weeks is being a bit positive I think...sorry. It's more like 12 weeks. I'm facing the same surgery myself at the end of the year and it's pretty much as major as it gets. I had a liver tumour removed last year and the surgeons (the surgeon - neuro and thoracic surgeon) say it will be about the same as far as recovery. The surgeon that would do the entry is actually the same guy that did my liver surgery and he said that it would take 6 months to feel normal again and he was right. I could do things but I was very very tired and in a fair bit of pain. 12 months later and I feel like the same old me again. Thoracic surgery is not fun and it's scary, I know what you're going through.

Please pm me if you have any questions.

Take care.
