This TMo representative told me....

I was at a T-Mobile store today, and wanted to clarify a few pricing options for a 8320, and service as well. During the converstaion the rep mentioned that you don't need to pay the $10 a month to use UMA. He went on to say the $10 a month HomeSpot or whatever it's called, allows you to have unlimited calling without using your minutes, but if you don't have the plan, you can still use UMA, but will be charged minutes.

From what I have read, and from what others have told me, this is not true, but I wanted to verify this information. On top of it all, the rep actually owned the 8320, so I figured if anybody would know this, it would be him. I have his business card... so if this isn't true, he might need to be notified of this false claim.

The TMO rep is right it is true; You can use your curve for UMA without the UMA plan.
It's just like having a cell tower in your house, all things work the same.

If you want to have unlimited calling (not using your minutes) then you should get the UMA package.

I personally have the curve with TMO and use my UMA connection without a UMA plan at home since I don't have a cell tower near by. It works great.

Oh my God, that is so awesome. I have crappy service in my basement which is where my office resides, but my wifi router is sitting here right next to me.

TMO just keeps getting better and better the more I hear about it.

I didn't ask him that question, but he did say he's owned the phone for about a year, so I guess he does if what natesax7 says is true.

T-Mobile has always been very pro - Wifi. Unlike AT&T which resisted embracing WiFi, and did everything they could to hold out and not offer it. That was a great opportunity for T-Mo to draw ahead in the WiFi arena and they did. I give them a lot of credit for being open and supportive of WiFi. Overall T-Mobile has a great attitude towards all technology and their customers, they are a great carrier.

I understand. The point of asking the question would have been to see whether he had first-hand knowledge or just hearsay. Not every rep can be fully knowledgeable -- it does no harm to nail things down.

yes UMA is just used to improve recpetion in places where t-mobil eocverage isn't as strong. it gives customers the ability to have other ways of staying connected. if you want the ability to have unlimited calling when connected then that would cost 10$ a month

You know what, your right. I should have asked him that question, but thinking back to our conversation, he seemed to be very professional, knowledgable, and confident. At the time, I had no reason to disbelieve him. It wasn't until after our conversation that I got wind that this feature of the Curve (and possibly other phones) needed to be purchased as a monthly option.

For example, I swung by one of those Kiosks in the mall on my way out, to see if there was a price difference on the Curve. That's all I wanted to know. However, this was not something he could tell me without pulling my credit. He did pull out a sheet of paper, and comare what I'm spending on Verizon with what I would spend with TMO. Of course the UMA option came up. This is when he told me that the feature of the phone would not work unless I purchased the additional UMA @homehotspot plan. Funny thing was, he didn't think I needed it, and didn't push that product. :P

Since we are kinda on the same subject... he also told me that he would be able to cancel my contract with Verizon without having to pay an early termination fee. Well he said it would cost $5 for every month left on my contract... which would cost me $10 total, since my contract ends the first part of December. Has anyone heard about this? I have a hard time believing this is true.

Also why is the price of the Curve so much more In-Store rather than online? In-Store prices were $200 with rebates and a 2year contract. I can go to T-Mobile website and spend $100 for the same deal. What gives? I mean, I have no problem doing this online, but it's the same company.... The Kiosk was cheaper at $110. TMO Brick and mortar stores don't want to sell phones?

I'm sorry if this seems long winded with lots of questions, I guess since I'm really considering the switch to TMO, I really want to be sure I have all my bases covered.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~i am a t mobile retail sales rep and work for a corporate store stay away from the mobile solution stores or shock cities or any of those kiosks they do a lot of shady things just to get business I have to fix a lot of problems they create

I have some friends who worked at a kiosk and they get paid strictly commission. They told me they'd say anything to a potential buyer to make a sale. And UMA rocks I use it and love it!

.
This is my point exactly. This applies to every carrier. I dislike making a general statement like "you can't trust what the rep tells you" but unfortunately that's nearly always the case. While there is the exception where one encounters a truly good rep, one that knows his or her business, unfortunately these people are few & far between. It's commission sales that encourages the type of lies that cause everyone a problem.
