this motherfucker knows how to solve the debt crisis

There are very few positives, since it is probably unworkable.

But, hypothetically, even if such a national sales tax could survive at the 53% sales tax rate, all of the evasion would obviously create its own massive black markets.

Further, it would shift the tax paying burden predominantly to the middle-class, with the rich and poor paying little in taxes.

Also, the FailTax's $7,000 annual "prebate" is a pretty big welfare check. They propose making the entire middle-class dependent on getting a check from the government. Hell, at first glance, you would think a welfare state leftist dreamed that idea up.

damn people, get away from the school books and get into real life.

Tax rates are bullshit because thanks to government helping out themselves and their frienRAB, the more you have, the more loopholes and tax breaks you have available to you.

Look, let's make this simple.

Think of tax rates as a fence. When it's low, people are less inclined to dick around with loopholes and breaks and just pay the tax. It's easier to get over.

As the tax rate goes up, people in general start to see THEIR money going to government more and more and they start looking at the loopholes and breaks more seriously. The effort to pay tax is being outweighed by the money being paid out but it's getting close to breaking point.

When you hit a certain percentage of tax, then the wealthy do simple cost/benefit analysis and use those loopholes and breaks more and more aggressively as well as other options such as moving businesses or closing shops etc. Now even though the percentage is high, they are using every trick in the book to avoid paying the full amount. It's not illegal, these were designed into the system by those in control.

So as we have already seen happen in various states over the last couple years, as the rich get taxed more, the revenues actually DECREASED in every instance. Again, this isn't theory, we have real world experience as to what really happens.

Generally speaking, for one to refute an idea or a premise they must understand that premise . If one cannot list or even think about the positives of a possible idea then they either are lacking in the mentally capacity to think subjectively or they are lazy

For example

You: " rich people should pay 90% of there taxes, we have to control our debt"

Me: " I believe that it would be morally wrong to take 90% of someone's income regardless of our debt problems. However I understand this could work and may be the best solution for all practical puposes of reducing our debt"

Opposed to

Me: " well do you think there are any positives to such a approach?"

You: " trolololol derp herp, your retarded, no one would pay 55% case closed "

its not more progressive ONLY because of politics

many leftists have always discussed adding new tax rates on 500k, 1 mil, 5 mil, 10 mil

and raising the rates and eliminating deductions

however there is not a strong enough coalition of liberals to form a majority on tax policy, not even in 2009

U so mad.

Cheerlead the failed idea all you want, but most of the country is aware that a 30% sales tax is retarded. The FailTaxers must be abject idiots if they have deluded themselves into thinking that people will just happily pony up a full 30% for just sales tax.

As if there's is some magic in there that doesn't allow Congress to amend the law and add deductions.

The amount of magical power you attribute to this proposed law is pretty

If the FairTax isn't complicated then it's arbitrary, one of those HAS to be true of the part that determines how much money to dole out with those "pre-bate" checks.

Hypothetically speaking sense I do not have a computer to refute you %53 nuraber, if we were in magic fairy land and could impose and collect a 23% sales tax, would the middle class suffer?

Also ascertaining to the $17,000 pre-bate.

Personally I have no idea but how much would someone on maximum assistance be collecting from the federal and state government now ?

I would venture a guess that in extreme cases the nuraber would far exceed $17,000

I don't know that a progressive income tax is the best, but of all income taxes, one that is flat with regarRAB to marginal utility, would be most fair using economic considerations that matter.

Dunno. I think the brackets are way too low, personally. I'd guess most liberals, perhaps most Americans, would love to see their taxes lowered if we just had a $2,000,000 and $10,000,000 tax bracket with slightly higher rates.

I think it's pretty immoral for people to live in and draw benefits from a system designed to allow them great success but then refuse to pay a share of maintaining that system.

Hi. We're debating the fair-tax here. Not some non-existent imaginary ammendment that you just made up.

Honestly, if enough of the public learned about the tax and supported it so that it was passed, they would understand that one of the critical components is that it does NOT allow for these stupid exemptions. It would be like convincing someone to buy a 4-door sedan then trying to convince them to weld the back two doors shut.

Items you buy are marked up by the company selling them due to the taxes they pay. The company pays taxes so they pass that on to you. However with the FairTax the company's selling the products do not pay corporate taxes so they don't have to jack up prices to cover the taxes they pay...so items are cheaper then you add the sales tax on and prices remain the same possible a little cheaper. I bet you have never read the FairTax book.

Didnt watch the clip, but from everything I have previously read about the fairtax the nuraber was closer to ~23%

Also I have never seen someone take the time or the effort to explain its great shortcommings other than blurting out that everyone would cheat. Yet I have seen tons of threaRAB containing the percieved benefits and the ideas on why it would work.

I honestly would be interested if you would take the time to explain to me the thought process behind what you think would doom the fairtax idea.

You are assuming if we cut the corporate tax, at say 35%, apple will THE NEXT DAY say "ALL IPARAB ARE NOW 35% OFF, AND ALL NEW ITEMS WILL BE PRICED 35% CHEAPER BECAUSE OF THE TAX CUT"

or..or...or...

They keep prices the same and make a much bigger profit

HMMMM

We've already seen with the airlines that when taxes end the airlines keep the prices the same anyway and keep the money for themselves

we could simplify the tax code, eliminate deductions, create a new higher bracket, and lower the effective rate. BUT NOOOOOOO......

your tampons would cost the same under the fair-tax as they do today karen.

and how funny is it that all of the sudden you are bemoaning the corrupt mom-and-pop shops who would be the down-fall of the fair-tax (call it "main street" if you will) while considering Wal-Mart to be the beacon of honesty and integrity in diligently carrying out and collecting the fair-tax (i guess they would be..."wall-street").

i thought you were an advocate for small-town america, the "little guys" and not the corporate fat-cats like Wal-Mart.
