I'm going to try the legal way to take care of a problem.
Everyone in my apartment complex received a letter from our landlord.
Back up a second.
Every year we receive a dividend from the state, and this year Palin added $1200 to help offset the rising price of fuel, since we are paying the highest in the country.
Fast forward to the letter. The letter we all received said that the landlords, since they pay for water and heating, basically order us to give them half of the energy relief, or we get a 60 day eviction.
They are trying to force money from me that they are not legally allowed to ask for, and they are contractually bound to pay water and heat. They are the ones that wrote the contract stating they must pay heating and water. I'm going to give them a copy of the Alaska Tenant Act and underline where they went wrong.
My family used to own and manage more apartments than this company will ever see, and they wrote lease contracts all the damn time. In addition, I've gone to a local millionaire whom made his money by owning apartment and other complexes all across the country and asked his opinion about this. He's the shrewdest business man I've met and he says it's illegal. It's blatantly obvious.
This is the story in a nutshell. I received the letter yesterday, as did everyone else in the block. So far everyone we've talked to is against the idea, since not only is this wrong, both morally and legally, but also these apartments are overpriced, under quality, and don't offer a damn thing we can't get elsewhere for cheaper.
They were sold to these new owners, Sempire, about a year and a half ago.
There is no legal way that they can ask for this money, and we are under no obligation to pay them in any way, since they both wrote and signed a contract stating they would cover such utilities.
So far, in 24 hours, we have Alaska Housing (assisted living, basically), the Kenaitze Native Corp. (members of the tribe are shareholders, and native corps. fight for their shareholders brutally...don't tango with their lawyers), and one of the tenants is a veteran and is handicapped.
We are getting local news involved, and Senator Wagner talked to my neighbor personally about it. A letter will be going in the paper about this so everybody on the peninsula will know to stay away from these apartments.
If this doesn't get them to drop their alleged 'request', we're going to follow up with a Class-Action Lawsuit.
All this, in 24 hours. Welcome to hell, Sempire. I love my landlords, they have been very good to me in the past, yet this is so blatantly crossing the line I won't back down until I have a letter of apology or their business is in the hole.
Bad time to try to extort money from me, I'm planning a vacation later this month, so I'm pissed about this. They are pulling this stunt when everybody in the apartment complex is receiving $3000+ at the same time.
Bad, stupid, thick-headed move, Sempire, and I'm sorry, but unless they back down,NOW, I'm going to have to crush them.
