The Tea Party doesn't actually exist, so it really doesn't matter whether "the tea party" polls at 10% or 90%. People can imagine the "tea party" as whatever they want to imagine it as. That's why the strategy of demonizing the tea party isn't working.

It's got about as much backing as the Ron Paul idiots. People don't take either conservative movement seriously. The Tea Party idiots are just fun to watch
 
20% of the country apparently backs it. That's a sizable demographic.

In fact, it's about twice the size of the # of black people in the country. If you only count registered voters, it dwarfs the black vote
 
It wasn't so much the debt, but the failure to manage the debt through a ceiling increase.

THAT lies solely at the feet of the tea party. Pass the ceiling increase then create legislation to fix it. Even still:
