This is England 86 (Spoilers)

A friend of Kelly.

Overall I found it disappointing.

The comedy elements just didn't work for me, it didn't cover how Meggy and Banjo went from being racists to integral parts of the group and as for Gadget and Trudy!

Agreed on the Meggy Banjo turnaround

Banjo was a bastard to Milky in the film... I can't believe Meadows would betray the film in this way so I'm sure Combo's return will shed some light on this.

This was one of my bugbears with the series. Improv is ok if the actors can actually cope with it but this lot couldn't. At times it was painful to watch. If it returns I hope they stick rigidly to a script and give up on this improv crap.

But why should it be sending a message or need to?

Life is crap sometimes, gets crapper and enRAB badly in all the wrong ways.

I really hope there isn't a happy clappy end as that would ruin it.

I didn't enjoy the film, it was a huge disappointment as I was really looking forward to it having been a Mod/Scooterboy during that very era. I tried the first episode of the new series and again, I just couldn't get into it.

I'm sorry if my presence on this thread offenRAB you, and yes, I am aware of the use for the remote control, I have avoided hitting the numbers 104 on the last two Tuesday nights.

I think the Mother didn't want to acknowledge the truth and was happier to believe that Lol was lying rather than have to face up to the truth and everything that that would have entailed.

Dear Lord what the heck is this ...

This is my era, no-ohne I knew was a total gormless pleb that was embarassing to watch and bore no resemblance whatsoever to reality.

Who wrote this claptrap? And more sadly, who spent a crap load of cash bringing it to our TVs?

I'll glady live on bread and water if I dont have to pay for this crud to be in my house.

I have wondered if some of the acting is ad lib. A few of the scenes with Shaun and the lady you mentioned above have been almost un scripted. The way they repeat themselves. Im sure a script wouldn't have allowed this.

I am loving this show. I watched the last episode last night on my own, and i thought it was brilliant.

As much as I like some Shane Meadows films, he isn't that original in his film making. I wonder how many of his fans have seen any Ken Loach or Mike Leigh stuff. I've always sort of seen Meadows as a bit of a copycat director in this sense but trying to put a cool and edgy spin on his films which Leigh and Loach have no interest in doing.

And as for the improv, as someone said, Leigh lets his actors create the characters first for weeks sometimes, until they know that person and how they interact with each other, and then he writes the script around it. If Meadows did improv on this, it didn't have the same realism Leigh's films achieve. But that said, Meadows is a mere beginner in this field compared to the other directors however I still enjoyed This is England 86 greatly.

Yes no doubt it's going to be be one giant roller coaster ride, yes I think the Lol/Woody relationship is real but milky as a third party helps the storyline. I keep banging on about it but I really want to see the Smell/Saun relationship develope . Of course the return of combo should light a few fuses :)

Having not watched the movie this makes sense, so thanks. I also thought it was maybe a chance at redemption, the chance to save a life rather than destroy it.

Oh well enjoyed that last episode watched it twice more or less on +1 too.
Only bits that got me anywhere near teary was Woody having a cry about his Lollypop last week and Woody and Lol making up this week.

The scene near the end with the gang playing carRAB and Kelly crying, got me thinking, assuming she was grieving for her Dad.
That would be quite hard for Lol and Trev trying to comfort a Sister/Friend respectively, despite them hating the man.
The Mother seemed to be a horrible cow going on the little we saw of her, so she can cry all she likes, I don't care.

Regaring Mike Leigh im pretty sure nothing in his films is "scripted" nothing is written down and the actors never see a script in rehersals or during shooting.

I think the jist of his method is that they rehearse so thoroughly and he gets every actor to know every little aspect of their charachter inside and out that a script is not needed. The actor will have built up a memory bank in rehersals so they just know instinctvley what they charachter will say and do. They arent improvising (ie making it up as they go along) nor are they following a script. They have rehearsed and rehearsed.

I kind of always assumed that Shane Meadows is simmilar in his method with out being as disciplened or millitant as Mike Leigh. So unlike with Leigh there will be a script and the actors will work around it and not be under pressure to stick to it.

Whatever Meadows does it works brilliantly.

I am very familiar with Loach and Leighs work (Mike Leigh especially)
Shane Meadows is not a "copy cat" director I am familiar enough with his and the afore mentioned directors work to know that is not the case. He is very much his own man.
This is especially apparent watching behind the scenes footage of his movies (in particular This Is England) he may have been inspired by Loach Leigh and Alan Clarke but he has forged his own way and made his own mark on the british film industry.
